The Pines at Whiting Leader, Bill Janson Receives Distinguished Service Award From LeadingAge New Jersey

Bill Janson, President and CEO at The Pines at Whiting, a full continuing care retirement community (CCRC) is well aware of the famous quote, “to whom much is given, much is expected.”  The reality of his hard work and commitment came full circle for Janson, when the son of a Lutheran pastor and Synod bishop in Pennsylvania, was awarded the prestigious Distinguished Service Award by LeadingAge New Jersey for his lifetime passion for and accomplishments in mission-based, non-profit work in particular – serving seniors.

Janson was presented with the award at LeadingAge New Jersey’s 2012 Annual Meeting and Exhibition Business Meeting & Awards Ceremony held on May 8th at Bally’s® Atlantic City.  In accepting the award, Janson commented, “At The Pines, we are committed to creating newness of life at the final stages of life so that our residents have dignity, respect, choices and fun.”

President and CEO of LeadingAge New Jersey, Michele M. Kent is quick to point out that the Distinguished Service Award recipient is selected by one’s peers, which can be both a blessing and a curse.  In Janson’s case, it truly is a blessing, particularly when so many positive adjectives are associated with him like caring, positive, knowledgeable, passionate and forthright.

“I first met Bill when he served on this organization’s board, and he really stood out because he was often the one who pushed back, and didn’t just go with the status quo. Bill is a risk taker for all of the right reasons, and I really respect his thinking and passion for the business,” explained Kent.

Janson, who has led The Pines at Whiting for 15 years, is dedicated to mission-based, non-profit work that began at Germantown Home, Philadelphia, and migrated to New Jersey.  Janson is credited with leading The Pines at Whiting into its first phase of expansion 10 years ago with an extensive addition to the existing healthcare community.  As Janson proudly recalls, “Our residents donated more than $3 million so that we could build an outstanding health center for assisted living and skilled nursing, and simultaneously The Pines also significantly expanded its Enrichment Center for fitness, the arts and our Fitness, Recreation, Education, Spirituality, Health (FRESH) Program for vital aging.”

It appears that 2012 is no exception, as The Pines is in full swing with some very significant expansion plans involving more options, more choices and more value, soon to be unveiled.  Currently in the works is the creation of a vibrant, three-restaurant approach to dining to bring more energy and variety to the residents.  The Pines’ front entrance is also being reconfigured, and new apartment designs for prospective residents will soon be available.

“This is the power of Mission, and I simply encourage people to take it into their hearts, work very hard in service, and strive to accomplish wonderful and creative things to help us do our Mission better,” added Janson.
