Three Lakehurst men were arrested and charged last week for their alleged involvement in an attempt to cash in stolen lottery tickets. 

Police first learned of an issue at the Lucky 7 Deli and Market on Thursday, July 26, when they were notified that someone was attempting to cash in stolen tickets. Lakehurst Police Officer Matthew Kline responded to the Route 70 store, said Sgt. Ron Heinzman. 

"One ticket was cashed in the amount of $30 before the store management learned the ticket was stolen," Heinzman said in a statement. "Another subject had attempted to cash a stolen ticket in at the nearby Lakehurst 7-Eleven the same day."

Police reviewed surveillance video at the stores, which led to the development of persons of interest. After speaking with the New Jersey Lottery, police found that "at least one" of the tickets was taken from a Jackson deli during a burglary, Heinzman said. 

On Friday, July 27, two search warrants were executed by police at two Lakehurst homes, leading to the arrests and charges of three borough residents, according to Heinzman. 

Richard F. Kopec, 18, was charged with receiving stolen property, conspiracy to commit theft and possession of prescription legend drugs. He was housed in the Ocean County Jail in Toms River on $15,000 bail with no 10 percent option, set by Judge Daniel Sahin, Heinzman said. 

Brandon L. Burbic, 24, was charged with receiving stolen property and theft by deception, and was lodged in the Ocean County Jail on $15,000 bail, no 10 percent option. 

Richard Kopec Sr., 58, was charged with tampering with evidence. He was taken to the Ocean County Jail on $2,500 bail, Heinzman said. 

A 17-year-old female from Jackson was charged with receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit theft. She was released to her mother's custody, according to Heinzman. 

Kline and Patrolman Jeffrey Emmons made the arrests. Assisting with the investigation were Sgt. Brian Baranyay, Officer Robert Seiden and Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Officers Ted Wielichoski and Jim Kohout.

Police expect to make more arrests this week based on information gathered during the investigation, Heinzman said.
