Hurricane Sandy Cost: $29.4 Billion; State Seeks Fed Help

Christie administration promises to rebuild

The most severe and destructive storm to ever hit the Jersey Shore also left a record-high price tag: $29.4 billion in damages.

The Christie administration has completed a preliminary analysis that puts the price of Sandy's destruction at the costly figure.

The estimate will be further refined in the days ahead, officials say.

The preliminary number is based on empirical data, field observations and geographical mapping, and supported by "expert advice" from the administration's cabinet members and an outside consulting company, said Governor Christie.

“In a short period of time, we put together a comprehensive and responsible estimate, which may increase in the weeks ahead, and I stand ready to work with our Congressional delegation and the Obama administration to get the funding support New Jersey expects and deserves in the aftermath of this catastrophe," Christie said.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., said he talked to Christie about the preliminary cost analysis, and promised to try to get funding help.

"This cost analysis is a critical step in our effort to move a strong emergency funding package forward in Washington," he said. "The people of New Jersey can rely on the congressional delegation to work with the Obama Administration, Governor Christie and our colleagues to deliver the funding necessary for New Jersey families, communities and businesses to recover and rebuild so that we're stronger than ever before."

Lautenberg is the vice chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, and a member if the full Appropriations Committee, which will write the Sandy emergency funding package.

The governor said he will continue to provide immediate relief for New Jersey residents who were struck hard by Sandy.

“But, be assured, I will spare no effort and waste no time to rebuild and restore our tourism industry, our transportation and utilities infrastructure and the lives of our citizens for the long term,” he said.

The preliminary cost estimate is inclusive of aid received to date and anticipated from federal sources including FEMA and the Small Business Administration.

The estimate will likely be refined further to consider and include the long-term impact on the next tourism season, shifts in population, impact on real estate values and other factors, officials say.

i think that number is grossly understated, on the "barrier island"(point to seaside) alone how many $mill+ houses were lost/inhabitable? i would guess at least 500. that half a billion right there. add the "water, gas, electric and even phone/internet infrastructure" the "commercial property" and add up other areas of the state(inland people who have storm related damage) that haven't received any media coverage.
with the estimated "$29.4billion" i thought anything over a 100 million automatically gets rounded up to the nearest million, so our trusted elected officials get to "keep the change"?

Most of those "million dollar houses" did not cost $1M to build - it's the land that has most of the value. If the land didn't wash away (this time) then the cost is only FEMA's part of the building replacement - not the higher valued land...

New jersey will receive billions in fema individual assistance. Our small business on the delaware coast will receive zero because our town incorporates protective wetlands instead of overbuilding greedily at great harm to the environment like new york and new jersey. We can expect further strain on taxpayers as long as we reward behavior that multiplies damage and penalize financially those that plan well. We need help for our town and the relief agencies won't share. Please help www.gofundme.com/woodlandbeachrecovery. Thank you from the forgotten victims

Why is rebuilding the governments responsibility. Let insurance pay for it or take a loss. Why should tax payer money be used to build all cash business for people who do not pay the fair share they need to or use tax money to rebuild some hedge fund managers second home which he paid too much for.

Good point. The government should pay for infrastructure repair, roads, water, sewer, bridges, etc but private businesses and homes should be paid for by private insurance. The government shouldn't be in the insurance business or subsidizing construction in flood zones.

Wms826 we plan on paying our fair share of taxes and are not an all cash business. We have no flood or storm insurance and could not buy any until title to the property is transferred. woodland beach has one commercial property used by a hoarder for decades to stash his treasure while a once vibrant economy fell to ruin. We close in august of 2013 and he us responsible for storm damage but refuses to pay, in the hopes we walk away and he pockets thousands as he has done several times. People in the town must drive eight miles for food and drinking water. Many in the county have not worked for over two years. In order to recover, create dozens of jobs that will take families off entitlements and provide food and clean water for 250 residents when the road floods we need help. Half the cost of restoring one resort vacation home will revitalize a county and pay back several times over into the economy next year alone. Because of our conservation efforts, there is less likely to be future damage than there is in new york or new jersey. Unfortunately we have been denied help after more than 600 requests. I keep going in the hope some intelligent person sees the logic in helping our town recover from sandy

Perhaps you should have considered the Jersey Shore. Which is why we pay the highest taxes in the country and, as you know, Delaware does not have a state income tax nor tax peoples pensions. And, therefore, that is why you have to pay. We are paying everyday to in state tax, income tax, sales tax and real estate tax. Therefore, my dear, we have a sense of entitlement, because we have ALREADY PAID FOR IT. However, I am sorry for your lose, but, frankly it is what you bargained for by living in Delaware.

Also we put our savings into this business to renovate one section. Commercial properties are valued according to income. We were told by lenders to rehab one section and open for business, which we did in eight weeks. We opened our store on oct 27 and many of the repairs must be redone after parts of the roof blew off and water poured in. we are not being greedy. I have numerous back problems and have surgery this week. My husband has a broken back and eight inch plate in his leg and works ten to twelve hour days. Getting this place going was a huge effort. Yet with the storm forecast to hit us directly we spent our last cash on supplies to help our neighbors and sheltered in place to help them in the aftermath. Because we could not board up adequately right afterward someone broke in and stole most of our grocery stock that remained. It was survival items and they weren't greedy, so we are not mad. We know it was most likely a desperate parent who needed to feed children with nowhere else to turn, since nobody will help us in delaware

Angel I have addressed my home state which has already sent substantial donations to yours. I have contacted over 600 sources. The media consistently ignores both maryland and delaware saying they were not harmed by the storm which is untrue. I find that new york and new jersey want to keep every penny of relief funds for themselves. Not a single politician, celebrity, media outlet or relief organization gas bothered to say thank you to two states who put your needs above our own or ask people to consider donating to the forgotten states. Even obama doesn't realize other places were affected. As long as the media refuses to acknowledge forgotten states, and new york and new jersey refuse to share or thank others I will be calling attention to our plight

John if you read my post you would see we suffered wind and rain damage only, similar to what I had after hurricane hugo in charlotte, nc which is hardly on the beach. Because we live in harmony with the environment we didn't suffer the storm surge damage absorbed by the marsh. People will want to visit the sand and fish. As a taxpayer is ut better to invest a small amount which will be returned many times over in increased income taxes and reduced entitlements, or to rebuild a footprint that will suffer similar damage in future storms? And technically we are still riverfront as the bay begins a mile south

Not really. As someone else pointed out we are taxed to the max. About time we got some of it back. Tourism at the NJ Shore is huge business in this state. I don't know what it's like in Delaware (but clearly, since you don't have Snooki, it can't be that big a deal:). While I agree our shore is overbuilt and under-naturalised, it is what it is.

Woodland beach at one point was the premier beach destination on the east coast with the first overwater amusement park in the country. Tourism is the third largest employer in delaware and we are taxed on the billions it generates. I agree that you should receive some reimbursement but not to the exclusion of other victims. I obviously know much more about your state than you folks know about ours. I think it is stupid to rebuild your shore without building in wetlands to minimize future damage. It is a waste of taxpayer money. We are asking for a lousy eight grand to replace inventory and the worst of the damage while you are getting billions and want full reimbursement for much lower payback rates. It us a drop in the bucket yet you begrudge a small amount that would help put an entire county back to work and lower your federal debt. As you said it is what is, greed and unconcern in the original overbuilding, your expected reimbursement rate and your utter lack of compassion for victims in other states. But hey, you guys are proud to have snooki represent you

Also, you realize that all flood insurance is subsidized from the federal government..aka FEMA..for the first 250K. So for the majority of people in this area who say they expect to receive money its because we have been paying a large amount of money each year towards this. @Joyce....I do feel sorry for the damage you have...I had roof and other damage here that will not be covered as well. But to come on a NJ site and try to solicit money for your personal issue is misguided. Your site shows that you hope to raise $8,000....and I hope you do. But you must realize the level of destruction that occurred here. A roof that blew off and water damage cannot remotely compare to entire sections of homes floating away into the Atlantic. To badmouth NJ residents is unfair...we do not make the decisions. I have no say in where the disaster money goes. How about using your words to write to your local or state politicians....it seems to me that would be a better use of your time than to try to promote a fundme wesbite while bashing the people you are asking for donations from. And I've got to tell you....I'm not sure how much money you will raise from people who live here who are donating our time and money to families who got rescued off of their rooftops with nothing but the clothing on their back while their homes were swallowed up by the ocean.

There is no media coverage outside of your area so I have to put pleas where the coverage is. I am asking for eight thousand out of over two hundred thousand in damages. I have been through the johnstown flood, two other hurricanes and lost everything I owned in a fire. Never before have I asked for any help and if this affected only our family I would not ask for it now. This small amount has the ability to keep us going in a place where our neighbors have to steal food to stay alive due to lack of relief. Believe me I am addressing legislative issues which reward environmentally damaging building plans and penalize those working with sea rise. If you don't want other people pointing out that an all or nothing distribution is unfair, speak up. I am not bashing new jersey but there is a great deal of anger building against you. If you look at gofundme you will see many of your citizens with sites, so why is mine wrong? Within your state many inland residents are being ignored due to your greed. If you don't want to be called greedy then share and say thanks. The other victims are getting zero federal aid. It's not wrong to call public attention to a site asking for help to be distributed to multiple towns and states who will appreciate it, especially when personally we are only asking for help with about three percent of our losses and that small amount will create several dozen jobs

Delaware and maryland both had significant damages on a lesser scale than new york or new jersey. Look at pictures of the ocean city maryland boardwalk and lewes/rehoboth beach areas for some examples. My husband works in flood damages and for two weeks was too busy helping other victims to attend to our property. I know of at least a dozen volunteer crews that went to new jersey to help. Last week an entire truckload of supplies was shipped from wilmington and this is one of many. Thousands of dollars have been sent in monetary donations. My husbands employer continues to send mold remediation crews to help. Yet the commenters here don't recognize that we as a state put your needs above our own for humanitarian reasons. As I explained earlier we personally do not have and could not obtain flood insurance. However at least 1100 delaware claims were filed. We are ineligible to file any claims for individual fema assistance in delaware as obama only approved funds for state and local government to reimburse them and repair infrastructure. This is because fema policy is prejudiced against smaller and less densely populated states. we all pay taxes and should be entitled to aid but are not. Yet romney was attacked for wanting to correct this ongoing injustice

Also we had much more damages than a roof but are not asking for help with those only enough to keep operating. Our building is a masonry boat built around four other buildings and the area of concern is about 1/15 of the area. We lost sections of a crows nest which we want to use as a base to watch boats in trouble. The entire ceiling above a diner big enough to seat seventy is collapsing. Two commercial furnaces were destroyed and a wraparound deck is about to fall off. Several sections of second story walls and both interior and external doors were lost. We will have about 100k of mold damage due to my husband helping others first. We have about three thirty yard dumpster full if damaged contents to remove, a carport, leanto and three sheds to replace. So I don't think 8000 of help is unreasonable

Joyce, you've completely hijacked this thread with complaints about NJ and FEMA's lack of assistance to DE. Instead of whining at NJ citizens go tell your Congressmen and Senators. The simple fact is that NJ and NY got hit harder so FEMA is going to focus on us.

My job is directly connected to state police emergency response, army corps of engineers and FEMA, and I can tell you first hand we've sent over a million tons of debris to solid waste facilities (not including organic vegetation) and we're not even a tenth complete.

I wish you well, but allow NJ to receive the assistance Gov Christie is requesting.

As I've stated earlier your state is greedy and will feel sorry for other people as long as you keep every penny of aid for yourself. How many of you have asked your lawmakers to stand up for delaware like carper and coons stood up to yoy? How many have asked your media to run a story in other affected areas? How many unaffected residents visited their damaged neighbors to the south to volunteer? I think it us grossly unfair for your governor to request this aid when he has yet to even offer acknowledgment or condolences to other states. So no, while you are little kids hogging the entire jar of cookies I will continue to speak up

Sorry, Joyce - just about all of the information I can find about the damage from this storm suggests that Delaware suffered relatively minor damage. If you would have rather the storm hit to the south so that Delaware could have been crushed and received all of the media attention, federal aid, volunteer help, etc...then by all means, wish for that the next time. If I lived or worked anywhere near the shore line in Delaware, I'd be thanking any God I could find for sparing me while showing compassion for those who got hit harder. I sure as heck wouldn't go to a patch website that is trying to provide information for those who truly are suffering to complain about it. Get over yourself already.

Joyce...As you can see by some of these post. A lot of NJ people are ignorant, greedy selfish individuals. It is all about them. Especially all the beach shore towns. Most of the beach towns and their residents have become snobs and all they care is about themselves. Our governor is known for being a bully, he is an embarrassment and a lot NJ residents love him. So that should tell you something. I personally don't feel like I should pay for all these beach towns and I am from NJ. I feel there is a lot more NJ residents that feel the same way. They are sick of paying for them every time there is a storm. It is the jersey shore beach resort towns that expects entitlement and everyone else should pay for them just so they can get a glimpse of the sand. Our governor is worrying about all the missed revenue so that is the main reason he is all over and on top of it. He is fighting for all the federal aid he can get. The politicians don't care about the people, they care about where their money is coming from first.

Ann Richardson, that objective non-agenda reporter for the Ocean City Gazette, wrote that climate change was a liberal hoax. Since that article, her beloved barrier island has had the snot knocked out of it so many times, this last one with indoor swimming pools for anyone with a ground floor home.
And now all of these Romney Republicans have their hands out for the federal government to save them from their own life choices that didn't quite turn out right.
If another major storm should hit here in the next year or two, who will want to live here?

I don't understand calling NJ residents greedy for getting federal aid....it is not up to the residents to determine where money goes. As powerless as you feel in not having received help, we are powerless in those decisions as well, even if aid has been.given where we live. Greed is not involved here....people are simply trying to get help. Instead of calling victims greedy, why don't you call the government out on unfairly distributing relief funds and call it a day.

Back in the day, my parents had a small house in Brick and wanted to move to a larger home, they whittled the many choices down to two, One was on a lagoon and the other was a few blocks away, both were $22,500. My mom wanted a cellar, she was adamant about it, so the lagoon house was ruled out and the other bought. Over the years I had wished they had bought the other house, I thought they had made a bad decision, especially when the lagoon house before the housing bubble broke was worth almost a million while the house we settled on only increased to $450,00. One of my best friends lives two doors down from the lagoon house we almost bought and is on the same lagoon. After the hurricane and the flood waters went down, I walked over to the lagoon house to see the damage and my buddy was outside throwing out his entire house furnishings, he invited me into his home to show me what had happened. The floodwaters had reached up to his fireplace mantle. All the first floor electrical system had to be replaced, walls, floors, in short, the whole first floor has to be redone. After seeing the damage, I was glad for the first time, that my parents had made the choice they did. I have lost any desire to live on a lagoon or by any water for that matter, if someone left a house on the water to me, I'd put it up for sale asap. I have no clue why people who's houses have been demolished by the waters, would even consider rebuilding and living there.

If they don't you should use your vote to put someone else in office that will better handle your problems should this or something worse happen again. But don't come and judge us based on media and news because your wrong. It happens everywhere and all states suffer from natural dissater events almost everyday. As I stated previously, FEMA will provide any business impacted by the storm with low interest loans. This goes for anywhere including NJ or Delaware. No NJ business is going to receiving money from FEMA without the need for it to be re-payed with interest.

Changetr you need to familiarize yourself with fema policy. The great obama who jumped on romney about wanting to decentralize disaster relief has dispensed aid according to a class structure. Fema loans will be available to you to rebuild because obama approved individual assistance to your state. He only approved public assistance for delaware. This means local and state governments receive some funds for storm expenses such as shelter reimbursement qnd infrastructure repairs. No individual or business in delaware will receive any fema or sba loans because our president refuses to make them available to us. I cannot apply for the same loans as you yet I pay my share of taxes. The media consistently indicates other states weren't harmed which is a lie. Fewer areas were harmed but damage was severe. This has resulted in an outpouring of private donations to your state and arrogant attacks ny your citizens

Oh boy -- Joyce, I'm sorry you are going through a hard time - we all are. However, I'm not sure what you are asking for? Sounds like you want NJ to give you their financial aid either personally, (or to the state of Delaware)? Our governor asked for help for his state - our state - NJ. Delaware governor should ask for help for your state. If you have insurance, place a claim. If you don't, then that's on you, just like it's on each person in any state who doesn't have insurance. The vice president of this country is from Delaware, reach out to him directly with your frustrations - perhaps he will be sympathetic. Delaware did not suffer the greatest loss - nor did NJ - it was NY that got hit the hardest. But that doesn't mean NY should give us their financial aid. It's state by state. Why are you so angry at NJ and not your own state of Delaware?
We are all sorry for everyone's loss Joyce - including yours. But accusing us of being greedy because we are not sending you - personally - a check is wrong.
Who's being the greedy one here?
You are having, what equates to, a 3 year old's temper fit. I'm glad, however, that you are alive and well enough to have that fit of anger - you survived - it's more than many others were lucky enough to do.
Read Change_TR post above - FEMA will help you if you accept it. If a loan isn't enough, and you want handouts, then you are going to have problems - especially from NJ and all of us horrible people :-)

I am not going to sob about how bad my family got hit because I am adult enough to know others got it worse. Why don't you take your moaning and groaning to the folks in Illinois? They did not get hit by Sandy so they would be more sympathetic to you. I am not going to apologize to you that New Jersey got hit far harder than Delaware. In fact I would not want anyone to suffer like we have.

If you look at my site you will see funds will be split between maryland and delaware. Many people believed media lies we are unharmed and donated to sandy relief. So if you believe it is the right thing to do to refuse to share any of these donations or even ask other areas to share with us, knowing the federal government will help you and not us, then I will continue to pity a state where people have so hardened their hearts

Once more before I sign off. Entitlements existed way before Barack Obama took office. If there were no social safety net such as welfare, food stamps and medicaid, the streets that you live on would be unsafe and the rule of law would be in decline.

That Barack Obama is giving freebies to lazy Americans, and to this I must agree, because you could hold a gun to an Americans head and say work! and they would say nope.
Barack Obama didn't make Americans lazy. They were already like that. He's just trying to keep them from crawling in your bedroom window in the middle of the night.

To OC Raiders - You are correct, entitlements existed way before Obama took office. His reelection just confirms that the majority of the American Voters want freebies.

To Joyce - I wish you and the rest of Delaware well. I read your complaints about NJ and the Federal system. I am assuming you vote. With that, I submit to you that you and the majority of Delaware voters are as guilty of apathy and greed as NJ. I notice Delaware not only reelected their incumbents (so I guess they do a great job), as do ours here. So I have to believe Delaware likes the current way of doing business. Also, you in Delaware voted to reelect President Obama too. You need to look in the mirror and Delaware before slamming us in NJ for getting Federal aid. One other point I would like to add, there are those in NJ that are selfish and greedy. But many of us are helping ourselves and others. We have stepped up for others in need too, from victims in Louisiana to our soldiers in the Middle East. I am sure you in Delaware can make the same claims.
Please do not put NJ down for what it is getting, as I believe you in Delaware want our Federal government to run the way it is.

Actually mormon mainstream does not allow polygamy barney. It was allowed for a short time only during a time of religious persecution when many men were killed leaving women to fend for themselves. The church allowed polygamy as a way to make sure all women and children were provided for and forbidden once the neef no longer existed. The magic underwear you refer to is a holy garment. Many religions have holy garments, hair locks or prayer rugs. Do you ridicule them also? Are you aware of the lds practice if fast sundays where they help people in need? What us so wrong with romney wanting to change a system that denies aid to a storm victim based on which side of the river they live on? You folks continue to show a lack of compassion and an ignorance of matters outside of your own block. And I wouldn't move to new jersey based on the treatment from folks here. Joe - FEMA is loaded up with mitigation rules (intended to reduce likelihood and severity of damage to property it funds for reconstruction, FEMA also does emergency planning, emergency response, and emergency recovery. This cannot be done more efficiently in the private sector or solely at the state or local level because interstate coordination is usually vital.

Oh Ok reality! FEMA may be the only agency assigned but doesn't make them qualified or efficient. Clearly their track record tells us all otherwise.

Let me fill you in, we spend $1 trillion plus a year more than we take it or looked at another way we spend 11 for every 7 we take in. For every $110 million FEMA spends, it borrows $40 million.

It was then candidate Obama in 08 who claimed we took out a credit card from Bank of China to support our spending addiction. Perhaps you should let him know of your China comment. He needs to know because he keeps doing it over and over and over or was he just a liar.........see I just like repeating what he says since everyone believes it.

Are you somehow justifying our obscene spending deficit and debt because we own it? Do you even know the difference between deficits and debt?

We owe China $1.2 T and Japan about the same. So, we pay China and Japan interest on $2.4 T a year. Smoooooooooooooth!

No Johnson, that is not the real problem. People who pay fed inc taxes should have their government help them when they need it. We don't pay just for the heck of it.

The problem is the government has handed out more than can ever be paid for and this dependency, this entitlement mentality is the problem. It's an addiciton of both the receiver and the giver who seeks power and wealth by pretending to care. 99 weeks of unemployment payments? Who pays for that? Social security tax cut but no reduction in future benefits? Who pays for that? Free healthcare? Who pays for that? It's all borrowed and put on future generations. How do you think we got to $16.3 trillion in debt growing to $25 trillion in 10 years?

FEMA while inefficient and not self funding isn't the real problem. Its barely a rounding error in the Fed government.

Medicare and welfare spending etc is. Medicare and Medicaid will spend $600 Billion more on 2013 than it will receive in dedicated Medicare taxes. That is the problem financially speaking. Obviously those receiving these benefits on borrowed funds don't care. Should we really borrow from future generations to give out stuff today knowing that the future can never pay it back?

Should we keep borrowing trillions of dollars or is it time to balance the budget?

OKIwilltry

4:23 pm on Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Joe - You take a way too simplistic approach. And at the risk of oversimplifying how so I'll get right to the heart of it: Government revenue and appropriations do not comprise a simple equation. There are multiple variables, exponants, etc. For example - the equation is invalid if you factor in just the actual cost of a program. You must factor in related variables including the expected cost of not doing the program, cutting it back, or enlarging it. So, again for example and using one of yours and assuming it is accurate - we cannot create a funding zeroed out (balanced) equation for annual medicare simply by eliminating the 600 million shortfall unless we factor in the costs of cutting that funding out and deciding that those costs are worth it. It could very well cost society more than 600 million if we eliminate those costs (treatment, meds, and countless other goods and servises - direct and indirect (indirect - providers, salespeople, manufacturing), that is.

Similarly - in an earlier post you make the blanket statement that "rebuilding" New Orleans was bad budgetting/spending, etc....but you likely gave no consideration to the costs (real, present day, future, and opportunity) of not rebuilding it....I look forward to a reasonable response.

Too simplistic? Perhaps for illustration but the root cause is still the problem. Too much spending and allowing spending to continue to grow. For example, Medicare spending is still growing. At least freeze it.

But thanks for adding that to the dialogue as it is important to note that while the spending is bad financially, it is (absent the waste) doing many other things that are beneficial but unsustainable. Just like defense spending pays soldiers, builds warships and planes and employs people in other sectors which if cut would have a snowball effect. I get it. Drastic cuts of any kinds will do damage. A phases approach is necessary.

But the problem is still the problem. We spend and borrow too much. No amount of tax increases will balance the budget.

2/2

Listen carefully to the words from the pols. They speak of reducing the "deficit" which means if we spend $1 trillion too much, let's only spend $900 B too much. NONE OF THEM has a clue on how to tackle the "debt' that is exploding because of this spending. You have to stop spending. At a minimum freeze it.

In 2022, interest costs on $20 T of debt will cost us $800 B a year up from $220 B now. Imagine wasting another 600 B a year just on interest because we allowed the debt to explode?

The fundamental question is why have we let medicare spending exceed the dedicated revenues to the tune of trillions knowing all along it was unsustainable? When was it intended for income taxes to subsidize Medicare?

If we just went back to 2008 spending levels of $2.8 T that would be a start. It wasn't that along ago that it doesn't make sense. Take all line items right back to 4 years ago.

Have you seen the federal budget

http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/budget/fy2013/assets/tables.pdf

Thanks for the contributions to the facts.

Re Rebuilding NO. What costs to not rebuilding? Did the costs to build outweigh the costs not to? It's just gonna happen again.

Joe - Fair enough...your defense spending comment demonstrates that we are at least in the same chapter. Perhaps we agree too that neither of us knows what the solution is. What keeps us off the same page may be that i believe, that given the reality of our debt and the lingering significant effects of the last recession, short-term deficit spending it necessary to fully strenghen the economy. Once there we can work down the debt effectively and responsibly. This is not to say that we should delay cost saving efficiencies in current programs.

@Iwilltry

Only those who don't understand spending = jobs think you can just gut the military or medicare and call it a day.

First step is to admit the problem. We spend too much.
Second step is develop a plan to spend less by first stop adding to spending and 2. reducing spending to prior levels - includes government, defense and entitlement spending across the board while incr revenues catch up.

For the record, inc tax revs were higher in 12 than 11 by $40 B and corp taxes were $60 B higher for a net incr of $100 B in new tax income without raising rates

in 2007, inc tax revenues were record highs $2.6T - yep all time highs - and the budget deficit was $160B.

today, inc tax revenues are $2.45 T but the deficit is $1.2 trillion now. Annual spending increases are driving the deficits and thereby increasing the debt.

Entitlement spending alone grow by $500 B a year from 08 to 12.

Obama's social security tax cut is costing $200 B a year in deficit spending even though no reduction in future benefits was made. Who pays for this in the future both the borrowing cost and the actual payments?

in 09, medicare/medicaid spending = $632B
in 13, they will equal $811 B
16 projection, $1.04 trillion

so from 09 to 16, Medicare/Medicaid spending will increase by 80% all on borrowed money

Sustainable?
