Joseph Stevens of Jackson was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusing to submit to breath testing and driving while suspended

A 56-year-old man was arrested near the Union Avenue barber shop in Lakehurst Wednesday for reckless driving and related charges, police said.

Joseph Stevens of Jackson was also charged with driving while intoxicated, refusing to submit to breath testing and driving while suspended, police said.

On Wednesday at 2:35 p.m., Lakehurst police were dispatched near the barber shop where an off-duty police officer was attempting to keep an intoxicated driver from pulling out of a parking spot, police said.

Upon arrival, police learned the susect was creating a "disturbance" in the local barber shop. The suspect, who was highly intoxicated, was asked to leave the shop after making suggestive comments to the barber.

Stevens allegedly then attempted to leave the parking lot and was stopped by an off-duty Jackson Township police officer, who called for police assistance, police said.

Stevens was in a pick-up truck attempting to back up when Lakehurst Police Officer Joseph Depasquale arrived. Stevens, who was uncooperative with police at the scene, was also charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction, police said.

Stevens was transported to the Ocean County Jail in lieu of bail.
