OMG....here we go again. That's two 87 year old guys crashing into other cars in less than 24 hours around here. One was killed on the Parkway, at 3 a.m., driving his pickup truck with NO LIGHTS.....Isn't there anyone around these people to tell them it's time to turn in their drivers license. Driving in Ocean County has because quite a scary thing.

Elizabeth, the driver in critical condition is my uncle. The insenstivity of your post is regretful and your depiction of random 87 year old people driving into each other is inaccurate. My uncle, the man in critical condition is a WWII vet who lost blood in Normandy to save our 'world' from Nazi Germany. He, along with many other '87' year old people deserve more than your random insignificant post.

So sorry to hear that once again there has been a serious accident on Rt 70 at the Rt 571 intersection. It sure seems like Rt 70 has innumerable crash fatalities. It's time the road was modernized with jug handles and other safety features to reduce the carnage. The Rt 70/571 intersection in particular needs addressing due to all the problems and accidents that happen there. Jug handles for left turns would be a BIG help to reduce the problem. I hope the state DOT is looking in to improvements for this dangerous and unimproved intersection.

I was going to mention Beckerville too! Seems like someone hits telephone pole there weekly! Speed bumps would help there; maybe median barriers and jug handles at 571? Seems there is always someone making a left over double center lines....

Quite honestly, I agree with ELIZABETH. Although I do feel horrible for the pain and suffering that everyone has endured, the bottom line is that all individuals should be retested at a certain age. Let me ask you a question...God forbid someone lost their life, would you then feel guilty for not questioning the fact that he still possessed a license at such an advanced age? I don't believe that many elderly individuals should be driving...their reflexes are not precise, their vision is impaired, nevermind all the medication they take and the medical conditions they possess, and there is ample alternate transportation for anywhere you may need to go. There is no excuse. I have a small child that gets bused to school...on four occassions I witnessed an elderly individual almost ramming his bus at an intersection. So when a child loses their life...will that change your mind? I had a hard time seeing my grandparents have their licenses taken away, but ultimately it was the right decision and nobody sufferred because of it. Stop thinking so selfishly and take some responsibility.

Ppl wake up everybody should be retested.....and there is only 1 person to blame Mr M,failure to yeild to oncomming traffic......there is a turn signal at this intersection so could have been failure to observe or maybe he couldnt tell the light was red non the less he was wrong and driver minding his own bussiness was involved in a senseless accident due to the inattentiveness of an elderly driver so sad

Laura, Don't listen, or even read these insensitive emails. People should be saying prayers not "blogging". We can all debate "jughandles" and the license issue when Jimmy wake's up. In the meantime how about a little respect and sensitivity for the people and family that are standing in a hospital room and hoping Jimmy "pulls out of this". It is a bad jug handle I agree!!!! But my Dad is clinging to life. This was NOT his fault he was hit by another car I only wish he had a seat belt on. He was only Driving to the store around the corner. I know I have not put mine in if the store is done the street. That is the only thing he did wrong was NOT wearing a seat belt so please don’t judge him if you don’t know him. This is the best man in the world that would give anyone the shirt off his back. It's like the comments section on this article has turned into a family blog about the accident, kinda weird to be honest.

Prayers for the gentleman involved… Route 70 the entire length of the way through Manchester needs to be evaluated. There are simply too many accidents. The folks that blame the seniors and the folks that blame the non-seniors are both correct.

We must accept the fact that there will be no retesting of seniors (a political third-rail) and the younger folks who need to get from point A to point B without being “stuck” are going to push the envelope I think if I was 80+ years old, I would rather not deal with folks up their bumper or with making a left with lessened reaction times across busy intersections.

Perhaps a three-pronged plan would be beneficial:
1) Do a proactive push to ensure seniors are aware of the public transportation options available (if they are) and any local services offered if they live in a community that provides such)
2) Cut through to connect roads where possible so that they can drive backstreets the length of common trips (running parallel rather than on Rt70), and
3) Divert some of the policing resources from the “rolling through the As We Grow stop-sign” initiative and the “right on red by the Municipal building” initiative to pulling over all too-close drivers or the aggressive right-lane passers, etc.

I know these are not all great ideas, but I think we should start to think of things we can do to mitigate the problems while accepting the realities.

First to address some of the comments ...the left turning lanes especially at 70/571 are not the best. After the green arrow for left turn changes for all lanes to go you still can turn but it's dangerous. A person making a left is usually going 10 - 15 mph since they are starting from a stopped position. the Individual travelling straight east or west on this road travel way above the speed limit. The vehicle that struck the turning one was most likely travelling at a very high and unsafe speed rate of speed and who knows maybe on the cell phone. I wonder if a speeding ticket was issued or was a breathilizer issued....were there any skid marks showing an attempt to stop or avoid the turning car. As far as retesting people for their driving ability as they get older is a great idea, unfortunately in this country where the old mighty dollar rules the automotive industry will fight that tooth and nail. Im sure the senior's are responsible for a large percentage of newly purchased vehicles which they are not going to give up so easily,

Wow mcdoodle very adult like,breathilizer,speeding,or cell phone doesnt take away the fact mr m durned into traffic for whatever the reason still failure to yield ive been doing resque for 20yrs now and its the.same story not our realitive it was the other guy...........grow up ppl
