Man Critically Injured in Head-On Crash at Route 70/571 Intersection

Crash occurred on Sunday evening

A township man was critically injured in a two vehicle head-on crash at the intersection of Routes 70 and 571 Sunday evening.

A 2011 Nissan Altima driven by Vincent Moscaritola, an 87-year-old from Manchester, was traveling east on Route 70 when his car entered the opposing lane of traffic while attempting to make a left on to Route 571 at 5:44 p.m., said Manchester police Capt. Lisa Parker. Moscaritola's car collided with a 2008 Subaru wagon operated by Walter Goldenbaum, 68, of Manchester, which was traveling west.

Moscaritola was not wearing a seat belt, Parker said, and was taken by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he was listed in critical condition. Goldenbaum, who was properly restrained with a seat belt, refused medical attention at the scene, Parker said.

Traffic in the area was delayed as emergency crews tended to the crash scene, Parker said.

Also responding were the Ridgeway and Manchester volunteer fire companies, Manchester First Aid Squad, MONOC paramedics, the Ocean County Criminal Investigative Unit and the New Jersey Department of Transportation diversion team, according to Parker.

Patrolman Ian Bole is investigating the crash, Parker said.

OMG....here we go again. That's two 87 year old guys crashing into other cars in less than 24 hours around here. One was killed on the Parkway, at 3 a.m., driving his pickup truck with NO LIGHTS.....Isn't there anyone around these people to tell them it's time to turn in their drivers license. Driving in Ocean County has because quite a scary thing.

If you drive on Rt. 70 you would know that it is the younger people trying to pass the slower drivers, even though this wasn't the case. Instead of being so insensitive you'd be better off (if you don't have anything elso to do) writing to your local police and state representatives. Or just stay home and try not to upset other people in their grief. Diane

Elizabeth, the driver in critical condition is my uncle. The insenstivity of your post is regretful and your depiction of random 87 year old people driving into each other is inaccurate. My uncle, the man in critical condition is a WWII vet who lost blood in Normandy to save our 'world' from Nazi Germany. He, along with many other '87' year old people deserve more than your random insignificant post.

I'm very sorry that the driver is your relative----again, why doesn't someone step in and help these elderly drivers instead of having them drive when obviously they have difficulty doing so. He wasn't wearing a seat belt, and entering into the other lane of traffic. What about the people he hit? No compassion for them? I certainly have the greatest respect for our veterans, that has NOTHING to do with being on the road at that advanced age. Again, sorry that your relative was injured and hope he recovers fully.

I hope your uncle get better soon, I was one of the firefighters that responded to the Landing Zone for the helicopter and I was worried all night about the driver. Tell your uncle to get better

So sorry to hear that once again there has been a serious accident on Rt 70 at the Rt 571 intersection. It sure seems like Rt 70 has innumerable crash fatalities. It's time the road was modernized with jug handles and other safety features to reduce the carnage. The Rt 70/571 intersection in particular needs addressing due to all the problems and accidents that happen there. Jug handles for left turns would be a BIG help to reduce the problem. I hope the state DOT is looking in to improvements for this dangerous and unimproved intersection.

If only it were that easy. Jughandles do not solve two of the major problems at that section of roadway: First, the people who think it's the Daytona 500 and whip into the right lane on 70 West and 571 to try and pass the people in the center lane going straight (when that right lane merges with the center lane shortly thereafter at the PNC Bank). Second, jughandles do nothing to prevent people from swerving into oncoming traffic (whether they are simply not paying attention to the road, impaired in some way, etc.). The second problem is extremely prevalent in Manchester both at this intersection and especially Beckerville Rd. I'm all for retesting people once they reach a certain age (and I'm not saying that this accident was a result of drivers who did not belong on the road - I don't know the facts in this case). But what possible modernization can defend against the people who drive like they have a death wish? But you're right David, there should be a discussion about how to improve the safety of the roadways for everyone's sake.

to Billabong. I disagree. A jug handle would have kept him out of attempting to make a left hand turn into oncoming traffic. That's why we have them in NJ, to eliminate left turns at intersections. As on so many signs in NJ, ALL TURNS FROM RIGHT LANE. Generally, the NJ DOT does a good job in being involved in every controlled intersection design in the state unlike some states where there is no rhyme or reason to roadway design.

David, you're talking about one accident. I travel through that intersection every single day, multiple times a day. The danger of that intersection is not simply keeping people from making a left turn (see my previous post for examples). The problem is much more problematic than that.

There should be no need for jughandles at this intersection. From my recollection, there are "protected" left turn lanes at this light in all four directions.

I was going to mention Beckerville too! Seems like someone hits telephone pole there weekly! Speed bumps would help there; maybe median barriers and jug handles at 571? Seems there is always someone making a left over double center lines....

Quite honestly, I agree with ELIZABETH. Although I do feel horrible for the pain and suffering that everyone has endured, the bottom line is that all individuals should be retested at a certain age. Let me ask you a question...God forbid someone lost their life, would you then feel guilty for not questioning the fact that he still possessed a license at such an advanced age? I don't believe that many elderly individuals should be driving...their reflexes are not precise, their vision is impaired, nevermind all the medication they take and the medical conditions they possess, and there is ample alternate transportation for anywhere you may need to go. There is no excuse. I have a small child that gets bused to school...on four occassions I witnessed an elderly individual almost ramming his bus at an intersection. So when a child loses their life...will that change your mind? I had a hard time seeing my grandparents have their licenses taken away, but ultimately it was the right decision and nobody sufferred because of it. Stop thinking so selfishly and take some responsibility.

Crystal, Finally---someone who sees the whole picture. Of course we feel awful for the gentlemen who was injured, it's about the bigger picture. This is a daily occurence in Ocean County. I drive on this road daily, I don't want to worry for myself or my family members when they get behind the wheel. How many accidents happened on this particular road in the last several months alone---many one vehicle accidents where an elderly person simple ran off the road into a tree or phone pole. God watch over you and your children!

Ppl wake up everybody should be retested.....and there is only 1 person to blame Mr M,failure to yeild to oncomming traffic......there is a turn signal at this intersection so could have been failure to observe or maybe he couldnt tell the light was red non the less he was wrong and driver minding his own bussiness was involved in a senseless accident due to the inattentiveness of an elderly driver so sad

Laura, Don't listen, or even read these insensitive emails. People should be saying prayers not "blogging". We can all debate "jughandles" and the license issue when Jimmy wake's up. In the meantime how about a little respect and sensitivity for the people and family that are standing in a hospital room and hoping Jimmy "pulls out of this". Laura if you need anything you call me, I am here for you sis. Love Michelle

It is a bad jug handle I agree!!!! But my Dad is clinging to life. This was NOT his fault he was hit by another car I only wish he had a seat belt on. He was only Driving to the store around the corner. I know I have not put mine in if the store is done the street. That is the only thing he did wrong was NOT wearing a seat belt so please don’t judge him if you don’t know him. This is the best man in the world that would give anyone the shirt off his back. Thank u Laura Moscaritola

Laura, why are you on a news site responding to people? You should be focused on your father right now.

It's like the comments section on this article has turned into a family blog about the accident, kinda weird to be honest.

Chris, I was just thinking the same thing. Actually this is more a way to discuss the problems in the area, look for solutions, maybe come up with a helpful idea or two. It's not personal, about one individual---it's a widespread problem---BAD DRIVERS, God knows they come in all ages, genders.....And most accidents occur within 5 miles of ones home, so not wearing a seat belt is just plain stupid.

Prayers for the gentleman involved… Route 70 the entire length of the way through Manchester needs to be evaluated. There are simply too many accidents. The folks that blame the seniors and the folks that blame the non-seniors are both correct.

We must accept the fact that there will be no retesting of seniors (a political third-rail) and the younger folks who need to get from point A to point B without being “stuck” are going to push the envelope I think if I was 80+ years old, I would rather not deal with folks up their bumper or with making a left with lessened reaction times across busy intersections.

Perhaps a three-pronged plan would be beneficial:
1) Do a proactive push to ensure seniors are aware of the public transportation options available (if they are) and any local services offered if they live in a community that provides such)
2) Cut through to connect roads where possible so that they can drive backstreets the length of common trips (running parallel rather than on Rt70), and
3) Divert some of the policing resources from the “rolling through the As We Grow stop-sign” initiative and the “right on red by the Municipal building” initiative to pulling over all too-close drivers or the aggressive right-lane passers, etc.

I know these are not all great ideas, but I think we should start to think of things we can do to mitigate the problems while accepting the realities.

First to address some of the comments ...the left turning lanes especially at 70/571 are not the best. After the green arrow for left turn changes for all lanes to go you still can turn but it's dangerous. A person making a left is usually going 10 - 15 mph since they are starting from a stopped position. the Individual travelling straight east or west on this road travel way above the speed limit. The vehicle that struck the turning one was most likely travelling at a very high and unsafe speed rate of speed and who knows maybe on the cell phone. I wonder if a speeding ticket was issued or was a breathilizer issued....were there any skid marks showing an attempt to stop or avoid the turning car. As far as retesting people for their driving ability as they get older is a great idea, unfortunately in this country where the old mighty dollar rules the automotive industry will fight that tooth and nail. Im sure the senior's are responsible for a large percentage of newly purchased vehicles which they are not going to give up so easily,
