Meetings Set for Monday, Tuesday to Discuss Middle School Mold

Two meetings will be held on Monday at high school for middle school parents, staff; two Tuesday for high school parents, staff

School administrators will address the mold found last week at the township's middle school with parents and staff on Monday, Superintendent David Trethaway said.

Two meetings are scheduled for Manchester Township Middle School parents and staff at either 10 a.m. or 6 p.m. on Aug. 20 in the Manchester Township High School auditorium, at which time school officials will address the situation, according to Trethaway.

Additionally, high school parents and staff are invited to meetings at either 10 a.m. or 6 p.m. Tuesday at the high school auditorium.

Testing and cleanup companies visited the school, located on Route 571, on Aug. 9 to inspect the building after staff noticed "visible signs of mold" in some first floor sections of the building, Trethaway said last week.

Staff were removed from the building after mold was found and TTI Environmental and Servpro restoration were brought in to complete a consultation, Trethaway said.

The school has had some spot cases of mold in the past, Trethaway said last week, but the current issue is apparent "in several spots."

The entire school was tested over last weekend, as the superintendent said that safety for students and staff must be ensured.

"We're going to make sure everything is cleared before we open the school," he said at the time. "With students and staff and everybody, we've got to be sure that it is 100 percent safe."

Manchester Patch will provide full coverage from one of the Monday meetings.

It is always amazing that problems with school buildings appear 2-3 weeks before schools are to open. This seems to happen everywhere, not just here. It makes you wonder what the people who are responsible for maintaining facilities are doing during the other 49 weeks of the year.

I Agree. Would like to know what the maintenance department was doing all summer that this was just noticed.

It seems to me that the mold could potentially be flourishing inside the building because of the school administration's money saving idea of turning the air conditioning on for four days and off for three days to save on electricity. Air conditioning takes moisture out of the air, it does not "cool" the air. If you run air conditioning for four days, then turn it off for three days with the massive humidity we have been experiencing this summer, somewhere in the building, condensation will be created. Perhaps all of this condensation being created from turning off the A/C every week to save money has just cost us, the taxpayers, much more with TTI Environmental and Servpro restoration than what they thought they were saving on electricity. Perhaps they should investigate just raising the temperature in the buildings five or six degrees but leave the A/C running so less condensation would be created to potentially curb the mold growth they are experiencing now.

The BOE changed the school schedule to accommodate some meetings that could have been held during the summer. Possibly in response to complaints saying they should do this during the summer, the BOE president delivered a section in his report titled Summer Activity in the District (June 27th.:http://www.manchestertwp.org/Page/1297). The report says they are very busy all summer making sure the school's maintenance is kept up (the quote: “The Maintenance Staff are busy completing heavy duty annual cleaning and special maintenance projects in order to help keep our schools in great condition”.)...how is this so if there is mold everywhere?

If you took the summer off, just say it…mold now noticed in late August? Come on.

People are going to go crazy when they hear the "solution"

I wouldn't want to be part of the BOE or especially the Superintendent at these meetings.

Will Patch be covering the 10:00 am meeting? Will we know the results before the 6:00 meeting?

If someone from the 10am meeting would kindly post their solution for this problem, those of us unable to attend any of the meetings would be ever so grateful.

The middle school students will be attending the high school from 12-5. No lockers and homeroom will be in the cafeteria. Message received from a friend who went to the 10 am meeting. I'm still going to attend the 6pm meeting.

Best to determine how the mold got there. Then correct that before spending millions on a clean up.......Just read the International Mechanical Code, Boca, NFPA. Ect. These books stress the importance of fresh air ventilation. Seems to me, there are more than one or two problems over there.

And fix the Track and Field Record board at the High School next Mr. Lister. Everyone on the planet knows Jim Hawk is still the School record holder in the Javelin. *Sorry Kevin Jones* But I did break your record 25 years ago (three years after you graduated) If your going to have a record board, have the correct record up there!

No, I don't think so. I do however want to congratulate the school for making quick work of a serious problem. While someone will always find someone else to blame, The school has done a great job in coordinating the coming school year under very difficult situations. Thank you Mr. George for verifying the needed necessary corrections to the record board
