UPDATE: Longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus Dies

Polhemus, 84 died at an area hospital last night, Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari says

Longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus died late last night at an area hospital, Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari confirmed this morning.

Polhemus, 84, had some type of cardiac procedure earlier in the week and seemed to be "doing fine," Vicari said.

"Then late last night around 11 p.m., he passed away," he said.

Polhemus was just re-elected to another three-year term in November. It will be up to Gov. Chris Christie to appoint his successor, Ocean County GOP Chairman George R. Gilmore said.

"It would last until there is an election in November," Gilmore said.

Funeral arrangements for Polhemus have not yet been announced, he said.

"We are going to miss him," Gilmore said. "He dedicated his life to law enforcment in Ocean County. He was a good person. His family is in our prayers."

Until Christie appoints a successor, Undersheriff William T. Sommeling will oversee the department, Gilmore said.

Polhemus would have entered his 28th year as sheriff in 2013. During the campaign, some questioned whether the aging sheriff would be able to perform his duties.

Polhemus declined to debate with his two opponents and never responded to Patch's numerous requests for an interview.

But he won re-election easilym garnering nearly 56 percent of the vote for sheriff with 110,450 votes. Democratic challenger George "Bob" Armstrong garnered 82,031 votes cast, and Independent John McMenamin received less than 3 percent, with 5,140 votes.

Come back to Patch later for more information on this developing story.

Let's see if Christie sticks to the program and does not appoint someone who will also be collecting a pension like Big Jack or Chief Mastro. If he does he should be impeached as he promised to end that from happening during his campaign for Govenor.

Let's face it, the local politicians and the machine should be in trouble for running a man they all knew was not going to make it to next year let alone the full term. It was all about keeping the slot under control. How dare a sick man like he even run and waste the peoples time and money electing him under such circumstances. is this why there was no debate or public apperances.

You keep your mouth shut if you do not know of what you speak. Show some respect for the man and his family. Sheriff Polhemus had a wife, children, grand children, and great-grand children. In light of recent events in this country, you should quietly support those who lost an important person in their lives and keep the political nonsense out of a death announcement. Your small minded, inappropriate, incorrect comments have no business in this forum. Sheriff Polhemus had a career that spanned over 50 years, he earned his pension and he earned some respect at the end of his life. If you want to have a political discussion, take it to a different forum.

I learned of the passing of Sheriff Polhemus via a long distance phone call today. He was a man that I held personally in high regard. It deeply saddens me to read some of the comments left by wanna-be sheriffs or maybe they are just sore losers and followers of same. Regardless, in my opinion, it is a sad day to have lost such a dedicated and sincere man. My heart goes out to his family and everyone who respected him. It is an even sadder day that some people are using this forum to taunt his memory and harass the grief of his family. And i might add, ashamed to post your actual given names. PS there is no need to respond to my comment, I do not have the stomach to come back to this page. My prayer tonight is that you let the family grieve in peace. Amen.

Older than Moses and barely made it to the election. I am sure that someone has been handpicked to replace him as Sheriff before Polhemus took his last breath. He gave many years as Sheriff and whether you liked him or not, he really should not have run again.

Reply

Seriously?

8:39 am on Sunday, December 16, 2012

While I'm sure the family and friends of Sheriff Polhemus are saddened at his passing, the reality is that he was 84 years old and in declining health. He had no business running again for sheriff at that age. Was he on the job running the department during Sandy? Most likely not -- his health prevented him from giving 100% to his job during that crisis. But that really doesn't matter to the Republican hierarchy -- he was just a warm body to keep the post for as long as his heart kept beating.

And as for who is going to replace him? Well who knows -- maybe Jon Stewart introduced him at the 12-12-12 concert last Wednesday night?

I respect him, had voted for him and surely if you think that there was not someone in the "wings" waiting for the Grim Reaper to arrive you are blind. If anyone is being disrespectful it were the ones in his party who were using his election to get another person in. It is done all the time. To those complaining that the Sheriff ran at 84 yrs old, did it ever occur to you that his election is a reflection on those who ran against him? Did Obama win because he did such a great job or ran against a weak opponent? Not long ago, John Ashcroft ran for the US Senate in Missouri and was defeated by a man who had died in a plane crash BEFORE the election. Take the hint. This was people's opinion of the also-rans!

You forgot the 'rest of the story'. Ashcroft ran against the then governor of Missouri, Mel Carnahan. When Carnahan died the lieutenant governor became governor and announced that if Carnahan won the election he would appoint Mrs Carnahan to fill the Senate seat.
So Ashcroft didn't, in fact, lose to Carnahan but rather to his widow.

I feel bad for his family as I would for anyone who lost a loved one. I'm sure in his personal life he was loved. My political views will be voiced on another thread that will sure to follow at some point when it is more appropriate. I should note that I have seen many threads after articles of people dying that were much worse than what I have read here but that doesn't mean that it is right or that it should continue. I have said for a very long time that when it comes to posting articles of someone who passed that comments should not be allowed. EVERY SINGLE time people write horrible hatred filled things even if they have no clue as to the facts. Examples are: the story of the kids whose car ran into the elementary school and they all died. People made assumptions and said things that were nauseating and by the way turned out not to be true. Same thing when the boy named Ryan died days after graduation from Central. They should stop allowing posts for stories like this. The political stories will follow and people can post on them.
