for sure, learned that lesson many, many years ago. we had our roof patched up with a guarantee of 10 years, two weeks later was leaking really bad again. called and could not get in touch with them, phone was turned off, only a po box on invoice, turned out to be gypsies.found out their address and everytime i went there they were not there, but had about 10 people living there, luckily, my homeowners covered most of it, but they were not legit. live and learn...........i sure did

What is the punishment for a 3rd and 4th degree crime..... go home and promise never to do that again?

low life..yes....does not matter if lis or not...they work under diff names....i lost 35,000...used no lawyer...i did all the work my self ..he got 5 yrs jail...did 3 yrs...court ordered , 50,000 plus ....never got a penny...he still is here in TR and working.....trenton says...he is in collection.....its been over 5 yrs now....

Don't be fooled by the license. The state contractor's license is just a way for NJ to make sure they get every tax dollar they can, and squeeze contractors for fees which get passed on to the customer. Choose a contractor that has done quality work for people you know, and refuse to give a deposit for any labor. Deposits should be given for materials that are delivered to your house only. I bet most of the complaints filed against home improvement contractors are against the ones with licenses. The piece of paper is least important aspect of choosing a contractor. Use your common sense, do your homework, and you will be fine.

when an estimate comes in a little higher, remember insurance costs real money, a business thats run properly with warranties and ins costs a little more, but they will be around for years.

Anyone who hires an unlicensed contractor, DESERVES to be taken for a ride!!

it's crap like this that gives us HANDYMAN BUSINESSES a bad rap!!
My husband and i own HANDYMAN DAVE here in Manchester, we have paid every year HIGHLY for our licenses and up to 500,000 coverage for insurance. Living in a senior area, we also know most seniors don't have a lot of money. our business has a great name and a wonderful reputation, so reading things like this pisses me off. Even to the point when someone what's our credentials, we always give them a copy of our license & a certificate of insurance. As for deposits, we never take anything more then what's needed for supplies and even make things easier for larger jobs where you can pay by credit cards. My wish is that they fine this ARSE big time. And please, don't lose all your faith in HANDYMEN,. We take pride in our business.

Yeah unlicensed contractors AND licensed contractors who use those storage facilities are undependable. Some don't pay the storage rent on time and then try to blame their problem on the facility overlock. People...PLEASE drive by the homes of the contractor or their office. If their homes look unkept you will be less a thought then their homes. And if they do not have a legit office and only a phone number, check with the building department of your township. They know ALL the legit builders and contractors! JMO

As stated, it's ppl like this that give us legit handymen a bad wrap!! We do have a storage unit, HOWEVER, we don't pay for it monthly at all. We made arrangements with them as a donation. Sometimes we do clean outs where the family lost a loved one. Since we have no use for the items, we put them in the storage unit. BUT, all the items collected go to the battered women, Military, catholic charities and all the blankets and rugs go to the Whitesville animal shelter. Because we are a very honest company, we also give the families a tax receipt for the items cause they we're donated. Any job that we do we also offer our license and certificate of insurance. Since we do a lot of handyman work for the surrounding senior villages, we also make sure the main office has copies as well. this is one of the main reasons why we have a great reputation. PLUS, we always make sure our prices are fair since we know most seniors are on budgets!! now we don't have a fancy truck, we have nothing more then a magnetic sign on the side of the van. So just remember, no matter how fancy a truck is or how big the ads are, this doesn't mean jack......... it's the work you do and the world of mouth that makes our business successful!!

I wrote down your email, Karen. Not easy to find a good, honest handyman. Yes, you were stating a fact and it is freedom of speech, but too some it may seem you were promoting your business. It is good what you do in donating items to those in need. By the way, I think I may know you, I knew a Kaaren Kincaid years ago, are you a nurse? I will put your address in my book. NOTICE: when hiring ANYONE and not just Handymen.... don't be afraid to ask questions. Ask if they have a license and so on. JUST FOR THE RECORD, We deal with all the senior villages in the area of Manchester. in order to get in anyone of them to do any type of work, you MUST BE APPROVED BY THE MAIN OFFICE.
If in doubt, call your office and ask them if they have anyone in mind to do certain work that you would like done before scanning newspapers. They have listings of anyone you should need!! And Barbara....... don't be afraid cause 99% of the time i work with Handyman Dave lol I personally feel most older women like the fact there is a female on the job!!! but then again, i don't think anyone would call a Handyman Karen!!! lol
