School District Sets 2012-13 Holidays
Board approved holidays for the upcoming school year
It may be time to start thinking about planning those family vacations — the schedule for the 2012-13 school year has been set.
Manchester's Board of Education approved the holidays for students and staff during its regular meeting this week.
Superintendent of Schools David Trethaway cautioned that "some things may change" on the plan, which has students attending 180 days and staff 183 days.
Trethaway said that there is no county calendar this year, but local superintendents did gather to work out the dates districts will take off.
"For the most part, our calendar is fairly consistent with most of the schools in the area," he said.
Keeping the district's calendar in line with Ocean County Vocational Technical Schools was also a factor in planning, the superintendent said.
"One of the things we've tried to do in Manchester is stay consistent with the vocational schools, because when the vocational schools and the high school differ, that causes some problems," Trethaway said. "They either have to make up days or there are days when vo-tec is in and they're not here."
The board may schedule school after June 12 — the last day of classes — and/or during spring recess or other school holidays to make up for emergency closings, according to the calendar.
"We do finish at a relatively early time," Trethaway said. "Provided we have a quiet winter like we had this year."
