Township Man Hospitalized Following Crash Near Manchester Plaza Entrance

Traffic diverted while police investigated crash near shopping center

A township man was flown to an area hospital Wednesday afternoon following a crash that ejected him from his scooter near the Manchester Plaza entrance.

Berkeley resident Arthur Hall, 92, was making a left turn from Route 70 east into the shopping plaza entrance when he collided with Walton Hathaway, 69, of Manchester, who was driving westbound on a 2011 Suzuki Burgman scooter, Manchester police Capt. Lisa Parker said in a statement.

"The impact of the crash caused Mr. Hathaway to be ejected from his vehicle," Parker said.

Hathaway was taken by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune by MONOC paramedics for treatment following the 2:30 p.m. crash, according to Parker

A hospital spokesperson on Thursday afternoon said that Hathaway is listed in stable condition.

Hall was not injured in the crash, Parker said.

Westbound traffic along Route 70 was diverted for "several hours" by the state Department of Transportation while police investigated the crash, Parker said. It remains under investigation by the department's Traffic Safety Section.

Also assisting at the scene were the Manchester First Aid and Rescue Squad, Manchester Volunteer Fire Department, the township's Office of Emergency Management, Quality Medical Transport and Jersey Shore Towing.

The entrance last saw a major crash incident in March, when a Burlington County man flipped his motorcycle end-over-end as he tried to avoid a car making a left turn into the plaza from Route 70.

so agree. I try to avoid that plaza, but I do go once a month or so for a big shopping at shop rite. i got a new car last week and low and behold, an old lady backed out without looking and just missed me. I honked so loud, surprised she heard me.

Hathaway is lucky to be alive. It was a terrible scene. I agree at 92, you shouldn't be driving. We need to implement a new law for seniors in regard to driving privileges after a certain age

"ejected from his vehicle"??? He was riding a scooter! Doesn't take much to be ejected from that.
But enough already. Every week it's another accident on Rt 70. Just a matter of time before it's multiple deaths.

Are you even allowed to make a left hand turn into the plaza there? I thought you had to go to the light and then turn left onto Colonial Drive then into the plaza.

there has always been a left turn lane to enter the plaza driving east from lakehurst to lakewood. these two accidents sound similar, someone making a left turn didn't see the approaching cycle. sad, could happen at any age, both probably more likely by the young inexperienced, or the older with poorer vision.
