This is so funny to me. I hope the rest of you are happy including the good reverend Steve who is fostering this dangerous situation. These people are mentally unstable living in sqaulor. Rather than force them to live up to western standards with a roof and proper heating, we allow this and help them do it.

This is not some camp in he Sudan, this is America, in your own backyard. Do not tell me there are no options for these people. We pay taxes towards Section 8 and welfare. To choose to live like this is mentaly unsound. To help it is criminal.

Charge Rev Steve with complicity to this and sue him for damages.

You sir, strike me as somebody who has never had to want.
So, to recap, your solution to assist these people who are clearly "mentally unsound" before -we- do something "criminal", is to "force them to live up to western standards"
right.
yes, I removed the "roof and proper heating" part, because I don't really consider that a privilege of your position among your peers, I consider it a right. This is America right? I don't pretend to have the answers. but I don't make random accusatory posts telling people how funny I think their situation is either.

The injured parties should sue the township and the county and the state and the courts for millions, for allowing them to live in sub code dwellings.

This is the most ridiculous statement!! They put themselves there, nobody else did, yes some do enable it. However to sue people for their actions is beyond ridiculous!

Remember, our tax dollars don't even get to these folks. Our tax dollars go to all the folks who have homes and probably could have jobs, but would rather live on entitlements that come from our redistributed wealth.

How do you know if any of these people are not on Social Security Disability? But even if they get no direct gov't subsidies, our tax dollars are spent on all the Police, Fire, and EMT calls, as well as the emergency room bills they rack up.
I would hate to be a taxpayer who has to wait for emergency help while the services they pay for are diverted to this group. They family of someone who dies of a heart attack while waiting for EMS who are out in the woods with these yahoos ( with Minor Injuries according to the article) would have a great lawsuit.......

Where does the hospital mail the bill for their care? Oh never mind, I know the taxpayers!

Why does everybody think this?
They eat it.
Yes, they include it in the stats when they apply or grants, as is appropriate.
however it's the person reviewing the grants that has the power, they guy who got emergency care hardly stole anything from your pocket

The reality is that unless you are a single woman with children there is little help available to homeless people. Many of the residents of Lakewood Tent City do have jobs but affording housing on minimum wage is not possible.

It's a shame.

About your kids, I mean. I shudder to think about the sort of ignorant, narrow-minded, selfish people they are going to be when they grow up.

Despite what you may think, being a mother is not a hobby. You should take it more seriously.

Or why don't you go check out welfare these days its a crock of shit that is unless you're an immigrant you can have everything plus new sneakers smart phones and I pads!!!

I'm shocked at the majority of the comments here!
Do any of you personally know pastor Steve? Do any of you personally know those living in the tent cities?
Do any of you know why this situation exists?
Didn't think so.
Think before you speak, or in this case write.
The reason these people live in tent cities is because we have no real homeless shelter in our county.
Why? because there is no funding and quite honestly most people don't want one in their backyard.
Pastor Steve is a wonderful person who donates countless hours of his life so that these people don't die from starvation and the elements.
Yes this is beyond safe, yes this is a horrible living situation, but are there many other choices?
My heart goes out to these people.
For those of you who want to know more about tent city and pastor Steve, google search and watch the video's.
You might have a different outlook on their situation.
God bless those who live in tent city and god bless pastor Steve!

I'm Not Even Sure What That Whole Rant Is About. You Do Seem To Have An Opinion But I Don't See Any Facts Here.
Also You Have No Idea How To Use Capitalization.

Really? ground water?
You know what they filter water with? Sand.
I will not dispute there may be many reasons people have for not wanting a tent city in there town, and I will recognize that some are probably very legitamate if not narrow in the scope of the inhabitants. Ground water troubles are not one of them however.

C'mon now, how can I comment on other comments in which every word is capitalized a sentence begins with, "of corse," not Of course, and another contains the misuse of ellipses? Please people; please tell me you can commit your thoughts to print a bit better than this. If not, how am I supposed to take anything you write seriously? And by the way, when used as a title, the word 'reverend' should be capitalized. It's Reverend Steve.
Does anyone really believe another person would chose to live in a tent, in the woods, in the cold of winter simply to burden taxpayers? Should emergency responders ask about someone's financial status before responding to a 911 call? If so, let's hope the 911 call from that hypothetical taxpayer-the one having a heart attack, isn't trumped by an even wealthier taxpayer.
Oh yes, perhaps we should insist the residents of Tent City should live, "up to western standards." The Census Bureau released its analysis of U.S. poverty in 2011 which stated that 46.2 million people, (or 15% of the US population), live below the poverty line. This represents the highest level in almost two decades. Wake-up! The residents of Tent City and other places like it ARE, (capitalized for emphasis), living up to Western standards!

I am perplexed at why so many feel this was their opportunity to unload in such a negative way regarding this issue. If you haven't been there or know each and every situation of the people living there, you have nerve belittling those already so unfortunate. How about you try to ..... Pay it foward - instead if posting useless comments that get no one anywhere!

Most of you are in your warm home, eating a nice meal while you make these awful statements. Don't you have any love and caring for those who are not as fortunate as you??? Donate some clothes, blankets , coats, etc. to Tent City and show some love, instead of putting them down and criticizing Pastor Steve for his "caring". Remember to "pass it forward" and sent a little prayer their way. And how about thanking "the powers that be" for the blessings you have received. There, but for the Grace of God, go you!!!!

I thank my lucky stars everyday for what I have and know its because I work damn hard for it! I'm pretty sure I speak for most with this statement... Have a good night

It's unclear who you think you're fooling, Lee, but it's certainly not us. You don't work hard. You know it and I know it and everyone who knows you knows it, so why claim otherwise? Be honest with yourself. OWN the fact that you're a privileged, lazy, selfish person.

Just don't pass those traits on to your children. Please, for the good of all of us, teach them that you are NOT the example they should follow.
