Breaking: Minutes From Seaside Heights, Sandy's Destruction Still Apparent »
Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
Hello, Lakehurst, I would like to start this week’s column off by encouraging residents to support local business. I know how easy it is to go to one of those chains and grab and go. But you are missing out on one of the things that make Lakehurst, Lakehurst. I love being able to go into any business in town and hear all the local gossip. You can always see flyers of local organizations that are having fund raisers and what not. Heck, sometimes I’m even told how to do my job as Mayor the right way, LOL. But I do believe we are all losing sight of just what small town pride is all about. On …
For much too long there has been unfair treatment of urban hospitals, such as Community Medical Center in Toms River, when it comes to Medicare payments in comparison to Medicare payments to hospitals in rural areas. The theory in the past was that rural hospitals served more Medicare patients than urban hospitals. This theory is no longer true and many urban hospitals such as Community Medical Center are highly dependent on Medicare payments since they serve high proportions of Medicare patients. There is some good news. New Jersey legislators are leading the fight to balance the playing …
Another year has passed and I am delighted to report to our residents regarding the past year’s services to residents by the Community Services, Inc. of Ocean County, a private nonprofit agency that provides “Meals on Wheels,” “Congregate Meals” and “Social Support Services” to the senior residents of Manchester and the County.CSI operates the senior nutrition programs located in the Ridgeway Fire Station on Route 571, and in the Community Reformed Church on Lacey Road. Five days each week, CSI provides hot nutritious meals in a congenial setting and delivers Meals on Wheels to the frail …
To the Editor: We have recently received an alert from the Internal Revenue Service. There has been an increase in scamming activity which is referred to as “phishing." It involves either contact by telephone or by e-mail. The caller or e-mailer will claim to be an established enterprise in an attempt to scam the individual into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. These “phishing” scammers may claim to be working for the Internal Revenue Service. They will claim that they can help the individual file an amended tax return as an excuse to obtain personal …
It’s this time of the year that many homeowners are looking to repair or make improvements to their homes and are looking for honest and reliable contractors. In the very recent past, the state Division of Consumer Affairs has indicated that despite the fact that mandatory registration and licensing has been in effect for over five years, there are still many, many thousands of contractors operating totally outside the law. In addition there are many, that may be registered, but do not follow all of the required rules and regulations. The rules say the contractor must have their registration …
This editorial was written by Lakehurst Mayor Timothy Borsetti and does not reflect the views of Manchester Patch. Greetings. A Lakehurst dynasty has passed with the death of Martha “Marty” Barker Placek. Multiple generations of our youth knew Marty from her 25-years as a crossing guard with the borough, as did the motorists that dared her wrath trying to squeak by at Orchard and Pine Streets when she was crossing her “little darlings.” Her mother, Geneva Barker, had worked in the rope factory, property currently part of the U.S. Post Office site, which burnt down in 1911; her son, Charlie …
Greetings.  The bid notice on the refurbishment of the deep (996 ft) observation well (well 16) at our well field was published on January 21st, and we will have the bid opening on February 10th, at borough hall, and award at our meeting February 17th.  The necessity of this refurbishment, estimated to cost $ 75K, to remove approximately 100 ft of gravel pack, has been at issue with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) since 2005 when we first requested to convert this from an observation well to a production well.  At that time we were informed the standard for this type of well …

Greetings.  The weather, whether you like it or not, is truly a topic for conversation already in this new year. Two things that must be considered, and stemming from the same premise, are preparedness kits; one for the home and one for the vehicle.  Since we are a mobile society, witness the Christmas weekend blizzard, with the multitude of stranded vehicles in several states, it dramatically pointed out the need for an on the go survival system.  First and foremost your vehicle should be prepared for the winter weather: ensure antifreeze concentrations are sufficient to avoid freezing; …
A recent survey conducted by the N.J. State League of Municipalities was responded to by well over 200 mayors. The survey indicates that most of the municipalities who responded have similar budgetary problems as Manchester. The survey asked mayors to place in order of priority what they plan to do in order to cope with the financial problems they face, especially in view of the two percent property tax cap in place. Below you will find the top 10 items listed by the responding townships indicating what they plan to do to meet this cap. Along side of each, I will list what Manchester has …
Greetings. Winter is surely making itself felt; teens in the morning with a “high” in the 30’s in the afternoon; feels more like February than January. The severe weather has increased everyone’s energy costs, and coupled with the recession has placed an onerous burden on many families. I am again providing contact numbers and sites for assistance with home energy costs, and inexpensive ideas on ways to cut those costs. A web site, njliving.com will provide information about energy assistance programs to help cover expenses. For those without computer access: Gift of Warmth, 732-244-9041, NJ …

Periodically changes occur in Township codes and ordinances that might have an affect on our residents. The following is a list of some relative codes and some additional suggestions that may be of concern. MANY LAND USE QUESTIONS MAY BE FOUND ON THE MANCHESTER WEBSITE UNDER NEW TWP CODE IN SECTION 245 Landlords and Renters must register each January and have a new CCO upon change of tenants. HOUSE NUMBERS shall be at least 4 inches tall on each home. Smoke Detectors which are either electric or battery powered should be changed if over 10 years old. CHANGE BATTERIES WHEN YOU CHANGE FROM …
A very important situation has come to my attention recently which prompts me to issue this warning to our residents. Before I give you the details of this issue, allow me to say that we were warned about this going to be attempted years ago by one of the individuals most responsible for the quick recovery of the township from the worst political and financial scandal in the history of the state of New Jersey. That scandal occurred prior to 1990. It was in late 1989 that our residents were successful in defeating the political party that had controlled the township for many years, and whose …
