Transportation Management Association recognizes local students in Safe Routes to School Bookmark Design Contest

The Transportation Management Association for Ocean County, (GMTMA) sponsored a Safe Routes to School Bookmark Design Contest with the theme “I like to Walk/Bike because…”. The contest was open to all 3rd through 5th graders in Ocean County, NJ. The winners were announced this week in celebration of NJ Bike and Walk to School Week. 

Julia Morgan, a 5th grader from Pine Beach Elementary School in the Toms River School District had the winning bookmark design and  Isabella Silva, a 5th grader at Drum Point Elementary School in the Brick Township School District was selected as the runner up.  “It was really difficult to select a winning entry,” said Cheryl Kastrenakes, Executive Director at GMTMA.  “The students showed so much creativity in their designs and we loved that they took the time to really think about the reasons that it was good to choose to bike and walk.”  The winning bookmark was printed and will be distributed at many Ocean County schools and libraries. 

Ryan Reilly, Business Manager, for Ocean County’s Department of Transportation was on hand for the presentation and commented on the TMA’s efforts. “Ocean County’s Department of Transportation recognizes that teaching children bicycle and pedestrian safety is valuable and supports the TMA and with their Safe Routes To School program”.
