As Irene Departs, An Entire Week Of Sunshine Ahead

After a month of high rainfall totals, the skies will clear and all the sun will work to dry up our region throughout the entire week

This summer has been a month of extremes for New Jersey.

The state reached the 90-degree mark 26 times in the month of July and exceeded 95 degrees 11 times. July 22 will go down in history as the hottest day in New Jersey since recording began in 1890. All of New Jersey’s 21 counties reached the 100-degree mark, with Newark Airport reaching a brutal 108 degrees.

After Hurricane Irene dropped over nine inches of rain in parts of New Jersey, many towns across the state are now seeing record flooding. We should get a nice break from these extremes this week as the sun will be a sign for sore eyes after Hurricane Irene churned through our region.

After dealing with the fury of Hurricane Irene it should be pointed out that there is another tropical disturbance coming off the coast of Africa. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration states, “This storm has a 40 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours.

The Global Forecasting System shows that this storm will take a similar track as Irene but then travel more northward and head out to see without affecting our area. The North American Mesoscale Model shows this storm taking a nearly identical track as Hurricane Irene and reaching our area around Labor Day evening.

This storm is still way out in the Atlantic and there is a lot that can happen throughout this week that can change the track of this storm. Until then, enjoy the week of sunny skies and pleasant temperatures.
