Feb. 10: A Bit of Culture, OCVTS Programs and Free Screenings

An African cultural celebration, dramatic monologue, blood pressure screenings and more

There was a chance of flurries overnight, so watch the roads as you head out this morning. Though it will be mostly sunny today, according to the National Weather Service, the temperature is only expected to reach 28 degrees.

Here are some things happening locally today:

1. The Manchester Branch of the Ocean County will present the Iwa L'Ewa Heritage Dance Ensemble at 7 p.m. The group will perform "A Taste of Africa," a demonstration of African culture during which participants can "try on costumes, play instruments and learn to dance." 2. Students and adults interested in enrolling in an Ocean County Vocational Technical School program can attend an open house from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at any of its six centers. Over 30 career programs are offered and faculty will be available to answer questions. Check the course locator or call 732-244-1122 to ensure you attend the open house at the correct site. Lakehurst Center visitors are required to register by calling  732-286-5678, ext. 4100.

3. Georgian Court University in Lakewood will present "Steal Away: The Story of a Homesteader and an Exoduster" at 6:30 p.m. The dramatic monologue, written and performed by Penny Musco, tells the story of a New Jersey woman who meets a former slave after moving to Kansas. Reservations are required and tickets are $5 and free to Georgian Court students.

4. Knitters can drop in at the Manchester Branch of the Ocean County Library for the Chicks with Sticks group. The program, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., encourages knitters of all skill levels to meet and work on projects and share tips. The library says to bring no. 8 straight needles and yarn for knitting, or an H or J hook and yarn for crocheting.

5. Free blood pressure screenings are offered today by the Ocean County Health Department. Stop by the County Connection in the Ocean County Mall from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for testing.
