Five Things To Do Today for Aug. 5

Looking for a different way to while away a summer day? Check out these events.

Looking for something different to shake up your summer? Here’s five things to do today:

1. Chess, Anyone? Chess lovers of all levels and age groups are invited to join the Chess Club at noon at the Manchester branch of the The club meets Fridays in the Young Adult area of the branch. Learn the game or teach it, and make new friends in a relaxed atmosphere. No registration is required and there is no fee, but participants are encouraged to bring their own chess boards.

2. Take A Ride on the Orient Express with Agatha Christie. Take a step back in time with Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman and Sean Connery as the 1974 film classic “Murder on the Orient Express” is screened at the Manchester branch of the Ocean County Library at 2 p.m. There’s no charge.

3. Become a Mentor. If you have an hour a week, become a mentor and provide positive guidance for a child. The Ocean County Mentoring Program is seeking mature volunteers to provide safe friendships to boys and girls, ages 8 to 11, who may not have the support of a traditional family. Training is provided. The mentoring coordinator will be at the County Connection’s location in the Ocean County Mall, Toms River, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

4. Connect With the County Close to Home. Need to apply for a passport? Have questions about senior services in Ocean County? The Mobile County Connection will make a stop at Crestwood Village 4, 15 Moccasin Drive, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

5. Take In A Free Concert. The Ocean County Carousel of Music presents a live, free concert outside the main library, at 101 Washington St., Toms River, beginning at 7 p.m. Bring a chair for more comfortable seating and enjoy some music on a pleasant summer evening.
