Lakehurst Fall Festival Set for Saturday

Borough Revitalization Association event begins at 12 p.m. at Lake Horicon

Building on the success of the inaugural season of the Lakehurst Farmer's Market held over the summer, the borough's Revitalization Association will host a Fall Festival this weekend.

The family friendly festival runs from 12 to 4 p.m. at Lake Horicon and will feature the local farmers who sold goods at the summer market, according to event organizers.

In addition to produce, the festival will feature numerous activities for children including pumpkin painting, sand art, hair feathers, glitter tattoos, a doggie costume parade and donut eating contest, organizers said.

Residents can take a hay ride around Lake Horicon and visit a mad scientist tent. The day's festivities will will conclude with a pumpkin weight guessing contest.

To gain entry to the festival, organizers ask that residents bring a donation for the local food pantry. A rain date of Sunday, Oct. 14 has been set.

Also on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Lakehurst Historical Society will hold a flea market at the Community Center on Center Street.

The idea for the festival came to organizers after what they viewed as a successful run of the first farmer's market at the 22-acre lake located near Lakehurst's downtown which ran each Sunday from June 24 through Sept. 2.

"We've absolutely met our expectations and then some," said Janie Baranyay, a member of the Lakehurst Revitalization Association, before the final Sunday session.

Spurred by their success, association members also hope to complete a concession stand and bathrooms at the lake by Spring 2013 with the help of locals.

Mayor Harry Robbins has called the association and its endeavours "the kind of positive things that can happen when the residents get involved with their governing body."
