Five things to know today

We had a big thunderstorm in the area last night. Unfortunately, if the National Weather Service is right, it doesn't appear that today will be much better. Showers and thunderstorms are again possible after 8 a.m.

Here are some area happenings today:

1. U.S. Representative Jon Runyan, N.J.'s 3rd congressional district, will visit Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst for a closed event today.

2. The new Chess Club at will meet from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Players of all levels are invited to join. Call 732-657-7600 for more information.

3. The County Connection today will offer assistance with consumer issues. An Ocean County Consumer Affairs Department representative will help get answers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the connection. Call 732-288-7777 for more information.

4. The Robert J. Novins Planetarium has two shows: "Exploring the Spring Sky" at 7 p.m. and "Bad Astronomy: Myths and Misconceptions" at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $7 for children 12 and under and OCC students. Call 732-255-0343 for more information.

5. The Seaside Heights Music Festival is in its second day and runs from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Information on the festival is available online or by calling 800-732-7467.
