National Library Week Under Way in Manchester

Week-long celebration encourages patrons to use library for more than borrowing books

As Manchester's local library takes part in National Library Week, librarians are reminding residents that the institution provides crucial resources, and even some entertainment, in good times and bad.

"Libraries are more important than ever before," said Sandi Stark, senior librarian at Manchester's branch of the Ocean County Library. "They are not just about books."

According to an American Library Association press release, National Library Week began in 1958. The theme of this year's observance is "Create Your Own Story."

Stark said patrons can do just that by using library computers to take free online courses, prepare legal forms and complete resumes and online job applications.

The library, according to Stark, can also help families on a budget by providing more than just books.

"As households turn off their cable access, they are finding entertainment by attending library programs or borrowing DVDs for free," she said.

Stark said that the library will hold a "low-key" celebration on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
