Sept. 9: Free Stroke Screening, Shalom Book Club and Hawks Football

Five things to know in and around Manchester today

1. The County Connection will hold free stroke screenings beginning at 9:30 a.m. at its Ocean County Mall office. Call 732-288-7777 to make your appointment.

2. The Shalom Book and Film Discussion Club will meet at of the Ocean County Library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The discussion, led by Ocean County College professor Dr. Ali Botein-Furrevig, will focus on "The Tenth Song" by Naomi Ragen. Call 732-657-7600 for more information.

3. Quilters can drop in at the Manchester branch of the Ocean County Library for the Quilting Bee group from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The group shares ideas, techniques and patterns.

4. The team will host South Plainfield for their season opener at 7 p.m.

5. The Boardwalk Bed Race in Seaside Heights begins at the Franklin Avenue Stage at 6:00 pm. For more information, call 800-732-7467.
