What To Do After Hurricane Irene Passes

Tips from the American Red Cross to stay safe

The National Weather Service expects our area to experience Hurricane Irene's effects through Sunday. Once the storm passes, the American Red Cross has some recommendations to protect your safety and property.

1. Extended rainfall and subsequent flooding can occur after a hurricane. For those who evacuated, only return home when officials say it is safe to do so.

2. Stay clear of loose or dangling power lines. Report them to the power company immediate. JCP&L customers can report outages online.

3. Do not enter a building that has water around it.

4. Inspect your home for damage. For insurance purposes, take pictures of any damage.

5. Tap water may be contaminated. Use spring water to drink or prepare food until you are sure the water is clean. Also, if electricity has been out, check refrigerated food for spoilage.
