Surflight Theatre Seeks A Few Talented Boys

Auditions on Friday will help fill casts of "Annie" and "The Sound of Music"

Boys who like to sing and dance are being sought for auditions this Friday for the Surflight Theatre’s 63rd season of Broadway at the Beach, for a season that includes “Annie” and “The Sound of Music.”

Adult auditions are scheduled for this Friday as well, the producers said.

Last Saturday, nearly 80 children ages 5 to 16 attended auditions for the two musicals, but nearly all of them were girls, most from Long Beach Island, Manahawkin, Barnegat, Little Egg Harbor and other surrounding towns, but some came from farther to audition because they spend their summers on LBI, the producers said.

“We saw some really talented kids,” said Tchia Casselle, associate producer for Surflight Theatre, Ocean County’s oldest professional theater. But of the children who auditioned, “only three or four of them were boys,” she said. “We would welcome any children who could not make auditions last Saturday to come this Friday, especially boys who can play ages 10-15 for ‘The Sound of Music.’ ”

The adult auditions will be held Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the season’s shows: “All I Ask Of You: A Tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber;” “Annie;” “The Sound of Music;” “Once Upon A Time in New Jersey;” “Steel Magnolias;” “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change;” “Barefoot in the Park,” and “White Christmas.”

Adults are encouraged to arrive no later than 3 p.m., and any children, especially boys who can play ages 10 to 15, should arrive no later than 2:30 p.m. Call-backs will begin at 4 p.m.

The children who auditioned last Saturday came prepared to sing two contrasting numbers for a panel of judges. Those who got call-backs had the opportunity to learn a dance routine from Mary Jane Houdina, who worked on the original production of “Annie” on Broadway and will be the choreographer for Surflight’s production.

“The ones who didn’t get call-backs should not be disheartened,” Casselle said. “Some of them you can tell are going to end up being big stars on Broadway, but they just didn’t work for our shows.”

One final audition opportunity will be held in New York City on March 21, but there is already a wait list for that event, the producers said. For more information about auditions, please contact Surflight at 609-492-9477, ext. 200, or email jobs@surflight.org.
