Council to Hear Public Comment, Vote on Crestwood Village VI Police Patrols Monday

Township Council will meet for regular meeting at 6 p.m. in Municipal Complex

Police patrols through Crestwood Village VI streets will be voted on by Township Council Monday evening, after members give the public the opportunity to comment on the proposed ordinance.

The ordinance, introduced at the council's Aug. 13 meeting, was spurred by a written request for patrols of the Whiting senior community's roadways, driveways and parking lots sent to the township by the Crestwood Village VI Community Association, Clerk Sabina Skibo said at the time.

"This allows for the application of motor vehicle laws in the interior of the community even though the township may not own the roads," Council Vice President Brendan Weiner said during the first reading of the ordinance.

Residents will have the opportunity to comment on the ordinance before the council puts it up to a vote for adoption during the 6 p.m. meeting in the Municipal Complex courtroom.

When the issue of adding police patrols to private communities has come up in the past, such as in January when the council approved an agreement with Cedar Glen Lakes in Whiting, Council President Craig Wallis said that it is not a burden to the police department.

Prior to the Cedar Glen Lakes agreement, Manchester council members in August 2011 approved an ordinance to allow township police to patrol neighborhood streets in the Ridgeway Mobile Homes Park.
