Fishing Derby Set for Saturday at Harry Wright Lake

Derby begins at 8:30 a.m.

Township children are invited to Harry Wright Lake in Whiting on Saturday to put their fishing skills to the test.

The "Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs" derby, sponsored by the Police Athletic League and Municipal Alliance, runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., according to Dominick Fresco, vice president of the PAL.

"The derby sends an educational anti-drug and alcohol abuse message as well as fishing education and fun," Fresco said. "Volunteers and generous donations from local businesses have made this a great day for our community. "

Children up to age 15 are welcome to attend and must be accompanied by a parent of guardian at least 18-years-old. Fishing poles at the free event will be provided to children who do not have one and prizes will be awarded.

"It's a really nice family-oriented event," said council Vice President Brendan Weiner during his report at the governing body's regular meeting Monday evening. "If you have a child or grandchild who wants to catch a nice fish, I highly recommend bringing them to the event."
