3 People Flown from Route 70 Crash, 4 Hurt

The two-car crash shut down the highway mid-afternoon Sunday.

Three of four people hurt in a two-car crash on Route 70 had to be flown to Jersey Shore Medical Center Sunday afternoon, due to the severity of their injuries, Manchester Township Police said.

Edith Kroner, 86, Anna Gernert, 93, both of Whiting, and Steven Ventrice, 53, of Toms River, had to be taken by MONOC and State Police helicopters following the 2:43 p.m. crash at the intersection of Route 70 and Roosevelt City Road, police said.

Kroner was driving a 2010 Hyundai Elantra westbound on Route 70 and was trying to make a turn on to Roosevelt City Road when the crash happened, police said.

As Kroner tried to make the turn, a 1996 Nissan Maxima driven by Lisa Ventrice, 47, of Toms River, slammed into Kroner’s Hyundai in the eastbound lane, police said.

Lisa Ventrice also had to be taken to the hospital following the crash, police said, but she was taken by ground to Community Medical Center.

The crash remains under investigation by Ptl. Paul Bachovchin of Manchester’s Traffic Safety Section, and no charges were immediately announced in the aftermath of the accident.

The statuses of those injured in the wreck weren't immediately available.

Assisting at the scene were the scene were members of the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, EMTs from Quality Medical Transport, paramedics from MONOC and the Manchester Police Patrol Division.
