Crockam Identified by Witness as Man Who Shot Lakewood Officer

Lakewood couple testified during second day of murder trial

A Lakewood man said he saw Jahmell Crockam shoot Lakewood police officer Christopher Matlosz.

Leonard Scalzo described Crockam's fatal encounter with Matlosz, according to Associated Press reporting of the trial's second day on Thursday. The Lakewood man said that he saw the shooting and locked eyes with Crockam, 20, between the shots he fired at the 27-year-old officer who was killed on Jan. 14, 2011, while seated in his patrol car on August Drive.

Leonard Scalzo's wife, Denise, was heard screaming that she saw the shooting on a 911 call played for the jury, the AP reports.

Defense attorney Mark Fury attempted to undermine Leonard Scalzo's credibility by questioning if the witness was "misrepresenting" his memory to peg Crockam to the crime, according to the AP report.

Fury also questioned whether Leonard Scalzo had actually witnessed the shooting, since he told a 911 dispatcher that he heard shots, but did not say that he saw anything.
