Lakehurst Woman Admits to Fabricating Armed Robbery Claim

Borough woman admitted alleged robbery never occurred

A Lakehurst woman faces falsification charges after she claimed to have been robbed at knife-point at a borough convenience store in late August.

Ruth Dicanto, 30, called at about 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 27 from the Lakehurst  on Route 70 — just as Hurricane Irene was beginning to impact the area — claiming that she had been robbed of over $400 by a knife-wielding male who "opened her car door and demanded her money," said Lakehurst Police Sgt. Ronald Heinzman.

Officer Matthew Kline investigated the alleged incident by reviewing surveillance video, Dicanto's original call to the Ocean County Sheriff's Department and her police report. Dicanto was then called in to the department headquarters for an interview with police on Sept. 8, Heinzman said.

"Ms. Dicanto admitted during her interview with [police officer] Kline that she fabricated her story and the robbery never occurred," Heinzman said.

According to police, Dicanto was charged at the Lakehurst Police Department with filing a false police report and creating a false public alarm. Dicanto was released and her case is pending transfer to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, Heiznman said.
