Little Egg Harbor Motorcyclist Badly Injured In Whiting Crash

Accident closed roadway for two hours

A Little Egg Harbor Township man suffered multiple injuries over the weekend when he lost control of his motorcycle on Route 539 in Whiting, police said.

Stephen Schonbaum, 53, was traveling south on Route 539 on his Harley Davidson approaching the Cherry Street intersection at 2:19 p.m. on July 12, when he saw traffic ahead of him and put abruptly applied his brakes, according to the police report.

The operator and the motorcycle slid south down the roadway. Schonbaum ended up in the Route 539 northbound travel land and the motorcycle came to rest in the southbound lane, police said.

Schonbaum suffered multiple injuries as a result of the crash, including a possible broken left leg, possible broken left helmet and cuts and scrapes. He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune by Quality Medical Transport, police said.

Traffic  was detoured for approximately 2 hours during the preliminary investigation.Patrolman Antonio Ellis of the Traffic Safety Section is investigating. Patrolman Thomas O'Hare assisted at the scene, police said.
