A Toms River man was airlifted to an area hospital after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a van Tuesday night in Whiting.
At about 8:55 p.m., the Triumph motorcycle, driven by 30-year-old Johnpaul Tinio, was traveling east on Schoolhouse Road when a Ford Van operated by Vincenzo Ciccarelli, 76, of Whiting, turned left in front of Tinio at the intersection with Route 530, said Capt. Lisa Parker.
"This action caused Mr. Tinio to lay down his motorcycle, which impacted the right side of Mr. Ciccarelli’s van," Parker said in a statement.
Tinio was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune by helicopter for what Parker described as "internal injuries." Ciccarelli and his passenger, brother Phillip Ciccarelli, were not injured as a result of the crash.
A hospital spokesperson on Wednesday morning said that Tinio is listed in critical condition.
Police were assisted at the scene by Whiting fire and first aid responders and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and Criminalistics Investigation Unit, according to Parker.
The crash is being investigated by Patrolman Douglas Higgins of the police department's Traffic Safety Section and Patrolman Peter Manco. Police ask that anyone with information regarding the crash call the department at 732-657-2009, ext. 4400.
