Minor Injuries Reported After Car Impacts Rep. Chris Smith's Whiting Office

Crash occurred Friday afternoon at Smith's Lacey Road office

Two pedestrians suffered minor injuries Friday afternoon after a vehicle struck U.S. Rep. Chris Smith's Whiting office off of Lacey Road.

Blanca L. Cardona, a 71-year-old from Manchester's Whiting section, was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla when she struck the side of the Congressman's office while attempting to park the car in a space next to the building at about 12:26 p.m. Nov. 18, according to Capt. Lisa Parker.

The car went forward and struck a steel barrier and small fence before crashing into the building located at 108 Lacey Rd., Suite 38A.

"The vehicle came to rest with the rear end approximately 3 feet off the ground on top of the steel barrier," Parker said in a statement.

The pedestrians, who were not identified by police, received "minor injuries" from debris when the car impacted the building and refused medical aid, Parker said.

Cardona and those inside of Smith's office were not injured, according to Parker.

Members of Whiting's Fire Department and First Aid Squad responded to the scene, along with the township's building inspector. Ptl. Salvatore Ventre of the police department's Patrol Division is investigating the crash, Parker said.

Smith represents Ocean County towns including Brick, Manchester, Lakehurst, Point Pleasant Beach and Borough, and Monmouth County municipalities including Howell, Manasquan and Wall.
