Unlocked Vehicles in Pine Lake Park Targets for Theft, Police Warn

Eight incidents of theft have been reported in October, according to police

Authorities warn that residents in Manchester's Pine Lake Park section should be vigilant after numerous incidents of theft in what police call "car shopping" occurred in October.

The incidents, in which items were taken from unlocked vehicles, were first reported between Oct. 11 and Oct. 12 when five cars in the 900 blocks of 7th and 9th Avenues, the 300 block of Champlain Street and the 1400 block of 4th Avenue were burglarized, said Capt. Lisa Parker.

Three more incidents were reported between Oct. 18 and Oct. 20, Parker said, when vehicles on the 1900 block of 11th Avenue, the 900 block of Hannibal Street and the 1700 block of 12th Avenue were targeted, Parker said.

Items reported stolen include electronics, tools, sunglasses, pocketbooks, book bags and U.S. currency, according to Parker.

Parker said that residents should make sure that their vehicles and homes are properly secured "in an attempt to combat these trends."

"It is equally important to report any suspicious activity to the police department," she said. Residents can call the department at 732-657-2009 with any information. Calls can remain anonymous, Parker said.

Though police are not searching for any particular suspects, the trend of  "car shopping" is "predominately committed by juveniles and young adults during the late night and early morning hours," Parker said. They will search residential neighborhoods for vehicles left unlocked and steal valuables including portable electronics, wallets, purses and money.
