Police Blotter: Virginia Man Charged With Drug Possession in Lakehurst

Man was charged on Tuesday

A Virginia man faces drug charges in Lakehurst after officers initially stopped him for using a cell phone while driving Tuesday. 

Officer Jeffrey Emmons stopped the driver of a Ford truck, 39-year-old Douglas Kirchoff of Colonial Heights, Virginia, along Route 70 after he spotted the man using a cell phone while driving, said Chief of Police Eric Higgins. 

"Officer Emmons approached the stopped vehicle and immediately detected burnt marijuana emanating from the vehicle," Higgins said.

When police searched the truck, "a quantity of marijuana" and pipe referred to as a "one hitter" were recovered, Higgins said. 

Kirchoff was arrested and charged with marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, having an open alcoholic beverage in his vehicle and using a cell phone while driving. He was processed at and released pending a court date, Higgins said.

Emmons was assisted by Higgins and Officers Iain James and Robert Seiden, the chief said.
