Police: Route 530 Speed Limit in Effect Even When Crews Absent

are advising motorists traveling on a section of a county roadway which remains under construction in Whiting to obey the posted speed limit at all times, not just when work is underway.

Capt. Lisa Parker said in a news release that "there has been some misunderstanding with regard to the construction zone speed limit on County Road 530 in the Whiting section of the township."

Parker said that the speed limit in the work area, which runs on the roadway between Schoolhouse Road and Route 539, is always 25 mph.

"The new speed limit, which has been authorized and approved through resolution, by both the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders as well as the Office of the County Engineer, is in effect 24 hours a day and not just when construction workers are present," she said in a statement.

The two miles of Route 530, also known as Lacey Road,  $4.07 million, under the contract going to C.J. Hesse Inc., of Belford. That is $100,000 under the estimated cost.

Freeholder John P. Kelly said the project includes 4,000 feet of new sidewalks, five new left-turn lanes at intersections, wider shoulders, a new traffic signal, three storm drainage basins and restoration of the rail crossing near Station Road, which has been completed.

Parker said that drivers should expect to travel at the lowered limit until the construction is completed sometime in the spring of 2012.

"As such, the police department is urging all motorists to exercise caution and obey the new speed limit in that area," she said.
