Police: Wet Road Led to Monday Route 70 Crash in Lakehurst

Virginia man exited truck after it struck a curb and flipped

A wet roadway due to heavy rains Monday is thought to have led to a single vehicle crash that caused a Virginia man's pickup truck to overturn on Route 70 in Lakehurst.

A 2004 Ford F-150 driven by Garret Caldwell of Purcellville, Va., was traveling west through the Eisenhower Circle at about 5:21 a.m. Monday when it struck a curb near the Mike O'Neal Motel and overturned, according to Chief Eric Higgins.

"The vehicle then flipped when it hit the grass area in front of the motel causing [it] to overturn and land on the driver’s side," Higgins said.

Police said that the wet road was the "contributing factor" to the crash. Lakehurst, like other areas in Ocean County, experienced storms throughout Sunday night into early Monday morning.

Caldwell was able to remove himself safely from the truck through the passenger side window, Higgins said.

Along with police, members of the Lakehurst Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene.

"Take your time on wet roads, and please be safe out there," reads a post made to the fire department's Facebook page following the crash.

Officer Stephen Gallo is investigating the crash, according to Higgins.
