UPDATE: Juvenile Struck by Car on Northampton in Stable Condition

Unidentified victim transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center, police said

A 14-year-old is in stable condition after he was struck by a car while riding a scooter on Northampton Boulevard Tuesday afternoon.

A portion of roadway in Manchester's Pine Lake Park section was closed from First Avenue to Broadway following the crash which occurred at 4:37 p.m., according to information released by Capt. Lisa Parker.

The boy was riding a Razor Scooter when he was struck by a 2000 Honda Civic traveling southbound. The vehicle was driven by Efrain Andaluz III, 19, of Toms River, police said.

The unidentified victim was taken by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he was admitted in stable condition with "lacerations, bumps, bruises and a mild concussion," police said. He was not wearing a helmet at the time, which is state law for juveniles, according to police.

The driver of Honda was reported by police to be uninjured.

Police said that the boy was weaving in and out of the traffic lane and then entered the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Third Avenue, where he was struck.

on scene detoured drivers around the accident location while they completed an investigation.

The Manchester Township and Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Departments, MONOC and Manchester Township Volunteer First Aid Squad paramedics, and the Ocean County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene.

In the aftermath of the incident, police issued a reminder that children should wear helmets when riding bicycles, scooters and skateboards.

"Not only is it New Jersey law but it can assist in preventing serious brain injury," the release states. "Parents are also encouraged to remind children of the rules of the highway as children need to exercise caution when entering the roadway."

The incident is under investigation by Ptl. Antonio Ellis of the police department's Tarffic Safety Section.
