Route 70 Reopens After Serious Crash Wednesday

The highway was shut down for about four hours.

Route 70 has reopened after a crash near the intersection of Manchester Boulevard earlier Wednesday afternoon, Manchester Township Police said.

The highway was shut down for about four hours following the crash, which happened around 1:30 p.m.

The crash follows an earlier accident that shut down a stretch of Route 571 Wednesday morning. Route 571 has also reopened after that crash.

Sorry to hear of another accident on the terribly dangerous Route 70 through Manchester Township. I just got out of the huge backup on Beckerville Road (the detour around this accident on Rpoute 70). The light where Beckerville Rd and Manchester Blvd intersect 70 has a very short green light cycle for the traffic crossing Rt 70. As a result, the diverted traffic from 70 heading west that gets shunted on to Beckerville has extreme delays trying to get through that light. There should be a police officer there to direct traffic and attempt to reduce the delay time. There was absolutely no officer there as far as I could see at 3:30 PM. Delay on Beckerville Road is about 30-45 minutes.

Also, I was listening to NJ 101.5 for traffic info (I was coming home to Whiting from a quick trip to Union County today) to avoid any traffic problems. There was no mention of this on the radio. I would have used an alternate route if I had known that 70 was closed.

As of 5:00 PM, it appears the road is still closed (I'm stuck in rerouted residual traffic on 539).

Whiting Girl MPD Just hired two more Police Officers so they have to stop saying they don't have enough Police to send into areas where there is so much speeding, exceeding of the speed limit, passing, riding your bumper etc. This is a very bad stretch of road and they better do something about it. This is the song and dance we also hear when we complain about the speeding in the senior communities.

Why would you expect MPD to get out of their cars especially to direct traffic! They are some of the laziest cops I've seen. I watched them this morning at an accident at Rt. 571 & Commonwealth. Tow truck is sitting diagonal across intersection to pick up one of the cars. The tow truck driver is dodging traffic trying to clean-up and there are 2 MPD cops sitting in the lane with lights flashing, window to window talking. Traffic is trying to get through a signalized intersection with a wreck, debris, men working, and lanes all mixed up and they are sitting in the cars BS'ing just like they do on road construction jobs. Great public image-get out and do your job and earn your high-paying salaries!
