Two Injured In Crash as Car Attempts To Pass Sand Truck On Slick Road

Portion of Route 70 closed for 30 minutes Saturday afternoon

A driver in a 2001 Nissan Altima struck the rear of a NJ Department of Transportation truck that was sanding a slick roadway Saturday afternoon on Route 70.

The Altima driver, Scott Hakim, 47, of Oakhurst, and his passenger, Delynne Coddington, 19, of Asbury Park, were traveling west on Route 70 near the intersection of Hill Top Road in the Whiting section of the township, when according to witnesses, the car began to pass several vehicles that were traveling behind the DOT truck, police said.

The DOT truck began to turn left off the roadway when the Altima began to pass in the east bound lane, according to Officer Antonio Ellis. The Altima then struck the rear driver corner of the truck causing extensive damage to the Altima, Ellis said.

Both the driver and passenger of the Altima were transported to Community Medical Center, Toms River, for complaints of chest pain and difficulty breathing. Both the driver and passenger of the Altima were reported to be wearing safety belts and there was front air bag deployment. The driver and passenger were listed in stable condition after admittance to the hospital, according to Ellis.

The driver of the State DOT truck, Deale Carey, 42, of Jackson, was uninjured, according to police.

The crash closed one lane of State Highway 70 for approximately thirty minutes.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Whiting Volunteer First Aid Squad.

This crash is under investigation by Ellis.

The Manchester Police Department would like to remind motorists to be aware of emergency vehicles actively engaged in snow removal. Drivers should reduce speed and increase following distance around these emergency vehicles.
