Wanted Man Captured by Manchester Police After Law Enforcement Database Hit

Patrol cars feature wireless computers which allow officers to complete checks on the road

A Toms River man wanted on an outstanding Pennsylvania warrant dating back seven years is awaiting extradition after being identified and arrested by a Manchester police officer.

Patrolman Robert Sharry was conducting a routine license plate inquiry on a Scion on Tuesday, Oct. 23, when "within a matter of seconds" a National Crime Information Center hit was returned, said Lt. Vincent Manco in a statement.

Sharry stopped the driver of the car on Route 539 near Roosevelt City Road. Upon further investigation, Sharry determined that the driver, 43-year-old Mark Haelig of Fieldcrest Lane in Toms River, was wanted on a no-bail NCIC warrant issued in Montgomery County, Pa., according to the lieutenant.

"The man, who was wanted for a probation violation, had been on the run from Pennsylvania authorities since 2005," Manco said.

Haelig was arrested "without incident" by Sharry and lodged in the Ocean County Jail in Toms River while he awaits extradition to Pennsylvania, Manco said.

The mobile data terminals installed in patrol cars provide wireless links to state and national law enforcement databases and allow patrol officers the ability to complete checks on license plates, driver's licenses, property and warrants without leaving their vehicles, according to Manco.

"Additionally, officers can complete their reports on the MDTs, which keeps officers more readily available out on the streets rather than tied up inside police headquarters typing reports," he said.
