County Offering Free Registration of Military Discharge Papers

Only 8,000 of 68,000 veterans in Ocean County have registered discharge papers

More than 60,000 veterans living in Ocean County are being offered the chance to register their military discharge papers for free, according to County Clerk Scott M. Colabella.

The treasured DD-214 papers are a key to veteran’s benefits, getting property tax breaks, government jobs, belonging to social clubs for veterans and for their families and dependents, proof of their military service.

Colabella said about 8,000 of the 68,000 veterans who call Ocean County home have already registered their discharge papers with his office. Recording the papers makes easy for veterans and their families to get copies if the originals are lost or misplaced, he said.

Those taking advantage of the service get a wallet-sized card as a record of the registration.

Colabella said he hopes more veterans take advantage of the service, which is being promoted during National County Government Month. This year’s theme is “Serving our veterans, armed forces, and their families.’’

To record the papers, veterans can bring the originals to the Clerk’s Office in the Ocean County Courthouse at 118 Washington Street from Monday through Friday.
