Last Chance: Local Accountants Ready To Help As Tax Deadline Nears

With the deadline to file income taxes creeping up on April 17, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has provided advice on how to reduce tax time stress while local accountants may still be offering assistance.

By visiting the IRS website, you can be informed on the latest news and have your questions answered.

On the website, you can also use Free File, a program that prepares digital copies of tax returns and files it for free.

For those who are making $58,000 or less, you qualify for free tax software that is offered through a private-public partnership with manufacturers.

No Need to Panic, says IRS

Do not panic if you cannot pay, said Greg Semanick, IRS spokesperson. The IRS recommends filing your return by the April 17 deadline and pay as much as possible to minimize any penalties and interest.

Request an Extension…But Pay on Time

Also, requesting an extension, does not give you more time to pay taxes due, said Semanick.

Requesting an extension will give you an additional six-months to file your return. But it is required to pay at least 90 percent of the total tax due by the April 17 deadline or an Estimated Tax Penalty will be issued.

To obtain an extension, file Form 4868, which can either be done through Free File at www.irs.gov/freefile or the form can be downloaded at http://www.irs.gov.
