MTHS Student Recognized as 'Mayors' Scholar'

Township Council presented the honor this week

A senior was recognized for her academic work, having been named as a "Mayors' Scholar" for 2012 through a proclamation made by Mayor Michael Fressola.

Lauren Beck was honored in front of the Township Council Monday evening. Council President Craig Wallis and Vice President Brendan Weiner presented Beck with a proclamation issued by the mayor.

"To get this scholarship is very hard," Wallis said. "You've got to be pretty darn smart. We appreciate all the work you did for yourself."

As a "Mayors' Scholar," Beck was honored for her "personal dedication and effort toward individual education advancement," the proclamation reads.

Beck said that this fall she plans to attend Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, where she will major in neuroscience.

"We wish you the best of luck," Weiner said.

The Ocean County Mayors' Association gives $1,000 scholarships to 20 senior students — one from each high school in Ocean County — and four $500 awards to county Vocational Technical students.

Over $485,000 in funds has been awarded to "students worthy of distinction and recognition of their efforts" since the association began the program in 1994, according to the proclamation.

An annual golf outing is held to fund the initiative. Registration is open for the August 30 event and more information is available online
