PETA Alleges Animal Abuse at Lakehurst Circus Performance

Animal abuse claimed at June show in Lakehurst

An animal abuse complaint file by PETA against the Kelly Miller Circus includes incidents that allegedly happened during a recent performance in Ocean County.

The animal rights organization alleges the circus mistreated its animal performers during several stops throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including on June 17 in Lakehurst.

“During the circus's Lakehurst visit, an eyewitness reported seeing a handler repeatedly whipping zebras during a performance, nearly causing one of them to fall out of the ring,” reads a statement issued by PETA. “Another handler was seen forcefully striking a small dog on the face. When not performing, the camels and zebras were tied so tightly and close to a trailer that they could barely move.”

A formal complaint—based on sworn affidavits from “numerous people” who claim to have witnessed abuse—has been sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, alleging violations of the Animal Welfare Act, according to PETA.

Circus officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the alleged incidents, but their website states that a team of professionals care for the animals and they receive medical exams every 30 days.

“The Kelly Miller Circus exceeds all federal animal welfare standards set by the United States Department of Agriculture under the Animal Welfare Act. We are regulated by and inspected frequently by the USDA, state and local authorities. The Kelly Miller Circus is a member of the Outdoor Amusement Business Association and have committed to the standards of animal care set by this organization,” the website states.

PETA also alleges that animals were abused during New Jersey shows in Carteret, Old Bridge and Washington, and during a stop in Weatherly, Pa.

The Kelly Miller Circus has been cited for denying veterinary care to animals, public endangerment, and other Animal Welfare Act violations, according to PETA.
