Residents gathered at Lake Horicon Monday to remember those who served

Residents gathered in the near 90 degree heat at Lake Horicon Monday afternoon to honor those who served their country.

"Today is a day of remembrance, and in my mind, a day of mourning," said Mayor Harry Robbins during his closing remarks at the borough's Memorial Day services hosted by .

The mayor reminded onlookers to keep in mind the family members that the 1.4 million service members who gave their lives for America left behind.

"Those are the people who had to stay behind and endure those losses," he said.

Lakehurst's Fleet Reserve branch President William Anthony told the crowd to honor the sacrifice of those lost by living nobly.

"We feel inspired to do our utmost to live to the ideals set by them and leave behind a free country, and the stars and stripes are still the standard of liberty," he said in remarks delivered before representatives from numerous borough groups laid their wreaths. 

Among those who laid wreaths were the borough's government, police department, first aid squad, fire department, boy scouts, VFW Post 10061, Fleet Reserve and historical society. Whiting first aid squad and fire department members also paid tribute.
