Flags at the are being flown at half staff in honor of 23-year-old fallen Marine Cpl. Nicholas S. Ott.

The township man in Afghanistan's Helmand province, according to a news release issued by the department. Ott was "conducting combat operations" in the province as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a portion of the United States response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks nearly 10 years ago.

According to a Manchester Department of Public Works employee, Mayor Michael Fressola asked for the patriotic commemoration of the Marine at the Colonial Drive building after learning about his death.

Other tributes are visible at the Little League Field and Ridgeway Fire Station on Route 571.

Ott was part of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Alexander George, principal of Manchester Township High School, said that Ott was a 2006 graduate who always had a smile on his face.

"He was just a great kid," George said. "He was a kid who had a contagious smile."
