As Tax Day Nears, Local Accountants Can Help

The deadline for federal and state income tax returns is April 18

Less than a week remains until the April 18 deadline to file 2010 income tax returns with both the IRS and the New Jersey Division of Taxation. 

The standard April 15 tax deadline has been pushed back a few days since it falls on Emancipation Day this year, a legal holiday in Washington.

Even with the extra days, now could certainly be described as crunch time for those who haven't already filed.

Maybe filing an extension seems like a good idea? Just make sure that if you believe you are going to owe money to the government that you still send in your payment with your extension papers. 

William Fence, a principle at the family owned K & R Tax and Financial Service Inc., in Whiting, warned that an extension is simply extended time for filing tax papers, not “extended time to pay taxes owed.”

If you haven't completed your taxes and don't know where to start, Manchester Patch has a roundup of local offices that can help. Appointments are still available, and some services offer weekend hours. Prices vary depending on the type of return required and filing status.

3. H & R Block

Hours this week: Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Walk-ins welcome.

4. H & R Block

Hours this week:  Tuesday through Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointment not required, though encouraged. A Spanish-speaking accountant is available at this location, though an appointment is required.

State Income Tax:  NJ WebFile

Federal e-filing is free, while state e-filing is free for residents who have earned less than $150,000 in 2010. Follow the links to find an online service that best fits your needs.
