Weekend Explosives Training at Joint Base May Cause Noise, Ground Shaking

Saturday and Sunday training will run between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.

Some residents may hear noise and experience ground shaking through the weekend as explosives training exercises are conducted on the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst ranges.

Two Army National Guard units are scheduled to conduct mortar training at the Dix ranges from June 7-9 between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., according to the base.

The units training this weekend are the 2nd Battalion, 113th Infantry Regiment, from Riverdale, and 1st Squadron, 102nd Cavalry (Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition), from Westfield.

"This training is essential and helps to ensure the readiness of America's fighting force," reads a statement issued by the base. "Residents may hear more noise than usual coming from the ranges and may experience possible ground shaking due to the training. It is important to note that noise from the ranges may travel farther during overcast weather conditions."

Base range complexes, which are located between McGuire and Dix near Ocean County's border with Burlington County, are occasionally used for training.

Residents throughout Ocean County, including some in Manchester, Toms River and Lakehurst, often experience the results of the training despite the long distance to the ranges.

The base "works hard to minimize the impact training has on its surrounding communities and is committed to remaining good neighbors," a statement reads.
