  • Educator For A Day: Encourage elected officials and community leaders to serve as “educators for a day”, for a hands-on school experience.

Friday, Nov. 18

  • Substitute Educator Day: Honor the educators who are called to substitute for the regular classroom teachers in their absence.

However, Manchester Township schools will have their own agenda to recognize American Education Week.

“Our elementary schools had Open House/Classroom Visitation for parents to visit their child's classroom during the school day on Monday & Wednesday,” said Lee Bruzaitis, public information officer for the Manchester Township School District.

“On Tuesday & Thursday, Elementary Parent Conferences are scheduled in the afternoon and evening (K-5 students have an early dismissal both days).  The PTA is also holding their Book Fair at all 3 elementary schools during this week,” Bruzaitis stated.

Bruzaitis added that many teachers in the district have special classroom activities planned.

“In addition, there will also be a presentation to representatives of each of the staff bargaining units (teachers, support staff, administrators, etc.) at the board of education meeting on Wednesday night,” Bruzaitis noted.

The first observance of American Education Week occurred from Dec. 4-10, 1921, with the NEA and American Legion as the co-sponsors. One year later, the then-U.S. Office of Education joined the effort as a co-sponsor, and the Parent Teacher Association followed in 1938.
