John and Linda McCarthy were recognized recently by the Manchester Township Board of Education for receiving the Four Chaplains Award for their volunteer service to the community.

Both are involved with the Manchester Municipal Alliance and helped to organize the Annual Polar Plunge, which benefits the Regional Day School prom and graduation ceremony.

Linda is a secretary at the Regional Day School and John, a retired Manchester Township police officer, inow works as a mail courier for the school district.

The Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Awards publicly recognize and honor outstanding members of society whose lives model the giving spirit and unconditional service to community, nation, and humanity without regard to race, religion, or creed exemplified so dramatically by the Four Chaplains.

The Four Chaplains were military chaplains who unselfishly gave their life jackets to fellow soldiers and gave encouragement to those in the water as they themselves went down with their ship.

The couple was nominated for the award by Regional Day School Principal Lisa Michallis and the Manchester Township Council.
