Manchester Schools to Receive Additional State Aid

District awarded an additional $453,145 as part of Christie's $850 million funding boost

Manchester schools will receive an additional $453,145 in state aid after Gov. Chris Christie announced an increase of $850 million in funding for New Jersey schools.

In February, the state Department of Education said that the will receive $453,145 more in state money than they did for the 2010-11 school year. 

Tuesday's announcement of an additional $453,145 will bring the total amount of aid for the 2011-12 school year to $5,248,309, up from the originally expected $4,795,164.

A call to Superintendent of Schools David Trethaway was not immediately returned, so it remains unclear how the additional allocation will be used by the district.

In a statement, Christie said that the increase is part of "our commitment to New Jersey’s children and families.

“Now is the time to complement the dollars spent with real education reform to bring a focus on student learning, accountability and results,” he said. 

Manchester schools business administrator Craig Lorentzen said in February that the loss of $2.3 million in state aid for the 2010-11 school year forced administrators to "make some very difficult decisions," including eliminating 23 staff positions and reducing extra-curricular activities. 

About  were made to the 2011-12 $50 million budget after it was defeated by voters in May, but no significant program or staff cuts were necessary.
