OCC Updates Nepotism Policy

Previous policy on books since 1985

Ocean County College has updated its nepotism policy to prevent the hiring of relatives of employees and members of the Board of Trustees.

The change applies to new hires. Those already employed by the college as of April 25 are grandfathered under the policy last changed in 1996, that allowed relatives of college employees to be hired if they met the requirements for the post and were not in a position to affect employment decisions of their relative.

“It is the policy of Ocean County College to avoid the hiring of relatives of employees and members of the Board of Trustees. Employees will not be promoted or transferred into a position in the supervisory chain of command of a relative. Additionally, employees will not be promoted or transferred into the same department where a relative is already employed,’’ according to the new policy.

Employees related by blood or marriage are covered, and the policy includes those linked in civil unions and domestic partnerships.

Exceptions to the policy can be recommended by a college vice president, but need the approval of Dr. Jon Larson, the OCC President.
